IBM’s blockchain course in India attracted more students than it can handle

When IBM announced a free online blockchain course for Indian students in June, it probably didn’t anticipate the response it would get. The inaugural edition of the course – titled “Blockchain Architecture Design and Use Cases” – has seen more than 21,000 registrations. In fact, the course has proved to be so popular that it can barely keep up with the demand. In an email sent to course participants today, the National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning (NPTEL) revealed that the unexpected interest in the course has created a backlog of registrations on IBM’s website. The cause is students trying…

Hacker exploits EOS betting platform to ‘win’ jackpot 24 times in a row

An EOS-based decentralized app (dApp) has been paying out big time. DEOSBet, a betting platform operated by DEOSGames, has been drained of a significant chunk of its operating funds in a heist that netted one ‘lucky’ punter almost $24,000. Over less than an hour, a decentralized dice betting game paid its jackpot 24 times to just one individual. Despite depositing just 339 EOS ($1,695), after the lucky streak was over, EOS account “runningsnail” somehow managed to walk away with more than 4,728 EOS (approx. $23,640). The lucky account was created less than a day before funds were first sent for…

SEC temporarily ceases trading of obscure Bitcoin and Ethereum securities

The US Securities and Exchanges Commission (SEC) has initiated a suspension of its cryptocurrency-based Exchange-Traded Notes (ETN). But don’t worry, it’s only temporary. In an announcement made yesterday, the SEC declared a suspension of trading in the ETN securities known as Bitcoin Tracker One (CXBTF) and Ether Tracker One (CETHF). It appears that this temporary ban has been instigated because there is still much confusion in the market over these trading instruments. “The Commission temporarily suspended trading in the securities CXBTF and CETHF because of confusion amongst market participants regarding these instruments. This order was entered pursuant to Section 12(k)…

Citigroup is making cryptocurrency investments less risky for Wall Street

The US-based investment banking titan Citigroup has figured out a way to make cryptocurrency investments less risky. The company has created what it’s calling “Digital Asset Receipts (DARs),” which will allow its customers to invest in cryptocurrencies without having to own them,  according to Business Insider. Citigroup’s DAR services will work much like its American Depositary Receipt (ADR) services. ADR allows for US investors to trade foreign stocks that don’t otherwise trade on the country’s exchanges. The cryptocurrency will be held by a custodian and invested through the Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation, a finance company that provides clearing and settlement…

A bunch of Mac App Store apps are secretly uploading user data to their servers

Generally, Apple’s app stores are considered to be the hosts of secure apps, but a bunch of apps from the Mac App Store are silently spying on the browser data of the users. On the list, there are several top apps such as Adware Doctor, Adware Medic, Dr. Cleaner, Dr. Unarchiver and more. Most of these apps distributed by Trend Micro. Inc were collecting browser history from Chrome, Safari, and Firefox and uploading it to the company’s servers. These apps duped users into giving them access their MacOS home directory with actions like as ‘Scan for Viruses’ or ‘Clear cache’. Top…
