A promising new cancer vaccine has shown the ability to ward off, and stop the return, of aggressive cancer cells. By adding a molecule called Diprovocim to a vaccine, researchers report being able to draw cancer-fighting cells to tumor sites in mice. It works in conjunction with other cancer-treatment therapies to stop some aggressive, and often deadly, forms of cancer, like melanoma. “This co-therapy produced a complete response — a curative response — in the treatment of melanoma,” said the study’s co-author, Professor Dr. Dale Boger of Scripps Research. The vaccine also prompts the immune system to produce the same…

A Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) student newspaper yesterday reported that the dean of the school’s computer science department, Andrew Moore, was leaving the school for an unknown opportunity. As it turns out, it’s actually one he knows quite well: He’s returning to his former job as head of Google Cloud’s AI division. The current head, Fei Fei Li, will return to her position as head of Stanford University’s AI department by the end of the year, reports Geek Wire’s Tom Krazit. The turnover is remarkable not only for Lei’s short tenure at Google – she joined in January of 2017…

A pair of computer scientists from Georgia Tech developed a machine learning-based method to automate the generation of novel video games. It’s the first of its kind and could lead to the democratization of game creation. Making a video game is hard work. Today’s modern AAA titles are developed by teams of dozens or even hundreds of expert computer programmers. Most of those teams use AI and machine-learning algorithms to ease development burdens – especially in popular engines like Unity – but until now there hasn’t been a way to automate the creation of an entirely original game. Matthew Guzdial…
