You’re going to die. This app reminds you 5 times a day

Most of us live denying the inevitability of death. We see death on the news but remove ourselves from the reality of it. Advances in medicine have given us a false sense of hope that death will never come, and because of this, death has become an even dirtier taboo than sex — or periods.  We shy away from things that invite discomfort, but it’s time we welcomed death into our lives — in app form. WeCroak is an elegant and simple app that casually reminds you of death five times a day and it’s meant to encourage “contemplation, conscious breathing…

EOS startup utilizes backdoor to access user wallets, retrieve airdropped tokens

An EOS-powered decentralized app (dApp) has come under fire, having severely botched an airdrop. After erroneously distributing too many tokens to its users, blockchain-powered content ecosystem Trybe had to access user wallets to reverse transactions. More than 100 EOS accounts were mistakenly awarded up to four times the amount originally designated. Game developer Russell “castle” Meakim shared his disbelief on social media, after discovering a large amount TRYBE tokens in his EOS account that shouldn’t have been there. “[…] There was a short while where I was literally looking at 8,740 TRYBE sitting on my account and wondering what the hell…

BMW steps on the gas to define its ‘blockchain strategy’ with new startup accelerator program

Car manufacturer BMW has taken further steps in defining its blockchain strategy with the announcement of a new startup accelerator program. Two were picked from a category specifically for blockchain startups. With this move, BMW hopes to streamline its “blockchain strategy.” The first of the two blockchain-based proposals came from Supermoney, which is creating a new digital wallet. It claims to provide a platform for customers to buy online and in-store using QR codes. The second comes from Bloom, which uses blockchain’s encryption principles to verify customer identity and credit history without storing the raw data on a localized server.…

EU Parliament just voted on controversial Copyright Reform — the outlook is grim

The EU Parliament just passed versions of the most contested articles of the new Copyright Reform proposal: Article 11 on ‘link tax’ and Article 13 which will enable censorship machines. Axel Voss (CDU, EPP), the rapporteur of the controversial proposal and its biggest supporter, clapped his hands and celebrated once the final votes were in on the new Copyright Reform today at the European Parliament. “Heartfelt thanks to everyone for the job we’ve done together. This is a great sign for the creative industries in Europe,” said Voss after the vote. An opposing member of European Parliament (MEP) stood up…

I’m breaking up with Apple’s product launches

Sep12

For the longest time, I thought of the annual September Apple product exposé like Christmas. Trust me, the parallels are there if you look for them. Let’s start with the most tenuous link. Saint Jobs, like Saint Nick, had a beard. So too does his protegé, Saint Jony, although it sometimes veers into disheveled stubble territory, rather than the full folicular product. Facial hair aside, both Jobs and Santa Claus are the figureheads of a yearly orgy of unabashed consumerism. And like Christmas, the buildup to the September Apple event was a crescendo of excitement. There’s another parallel I want…
