We were promised digitized health care… what’s the delay?

The issues faced by many in the healthcare industry when it comes to digitization are vast, not only in the UK and Europe but globally. We’ve come to view mobile phones as something we can take with us anywhere through the power of roaming. The same cannot be said for the delivery of wireless medical devices and networks, which could provide life-changing treatments to people, especially those with chronic conditions. For example, in England, 15 million people suffer from long-term conditions, with their treatment absorbing 70 percent of acute and primary care budgets in the country. By 2018, the number…

Conference apps are crap and (mostly) pointless

Oct01
by Sindy Cator on October 1, 2018 at 11:18 am
Posted In: Around the Web, Opinion

It’s increasingly commonplace for conferences (both tech and otherwise) to offer delegates a mobile app. These promise to help them find talks and make connections, but in practice, often fail to deliver. Nobody is more aware of this right now than the UK’s Conservative Party. For those not following British politics: The ruling Conservative Party is currently holding its annual party conference in Birmingham, England. It’s a high-security affair, with much of Birmingham’s city center transformed into a heavily-policed ring of steel. If only we could say the same about the conference app, however, which is rife with an array…

AI could help drones ride air currents like majestic condors

Oct01

Birds have long inspired humans to create their own ways to fly. We know that soaring bird species that migrate long distances use thermal updrafts to stay in the air without using up energy flapping their wings. And glider pilots similarly use thermals currents and other areas of rising air in order to remain airborne for longer. Yet, while we’ve mastered gliding through these updrafts using various instruments, the exact mechanisms that allow birds to soar are still unknown. But a team of researchers from California and Italy have made some telling steps towards answering this question using artificial intelligence…

Nepal blocks porn sites after spate of sexual assaults

Oct01
by Sindy Cator on October 1, 2018 at 10:40 am
Posted In: Around the Web, Insider

Last month, Nepal’s government issued an order notifying all the Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to block pornographic websites in the country as a measure to control the rising number of rape cases. The circular says: The Criminal Code 2071 article 121 and other prevalent laws prohibit the production and dissemination of sexually obscene contents. In order to prevent the access of such content through electronic media, the need of pulling down such websites inside Nepal has become necessary. A spokesperson for Nepal’s National Telecommunication Association (NTA) said that pornographic content has become a threat to the socio-cultural aspects of the country as…

Moonday Morning: Sim-swappers arrested for stealing $14M worth of cryptocurrency

Oct01

It’s rainy and cold here in Amsterdam, but the blockchain and cryptocurrency don’t care about the weather. At least I don’t think they do. Perhaps when it becomes sentient (which should be any day now) we can ask it. Anyway, it’s Moonday Morning, so here’s a round-up of top cryptocurrency stories from around the web this weekend. 1. An “Ethereum hotel” has opened in China. Despite the country’s nationwide ban on cryptocurrency, the hotel will publicly accept payments in Ether. 2. One of India’s largest cryptocurrency exchanges has decided to call it a day. Zebpay has stated that action from…
