Review: Skullcandy’s newest noise-cancelling headphones manage to impress

Skullcandy is a headphone manufacturer that immediately invokes derision from audio snobs. Expectations inevitably sink because a.) it’s a pocket money-friendly brand that targets the lower end of the market, and b.) some of its earlier, cheaper products incorporated designs that were more vulgar than a rack of Ed Hardy t-shirts. That means they’re often overlooked. Perhaps not for long though, as the Skullcandy Venue is one of the most compelling entry-level noise canceling headphones I’ve ever reviewed. Sure, in making the £149 ($180 in the US) Venue, Skullcandy did cut a few corners (we’ll get to those later). That…

Microsoft’s new Surface Studio 2 brings faster performance and a brighter display

Following the announcement of the new Surface Pro 6 and Surface Laptop, Microsoft also unveiled the Surface Studio 2. As expected, it’s the most powerful device in the Surface family yet. The company was a little vague about specifications during its announcement – we’ll update when we have more concrete details – but claims the new Surface Studio is now 35 percent faster than its predecessor. Helping in that area is an upgrade to unspecified Nvidia Pascal graphics that can push “close to 6 teraflops” and brings a 50 percent improvement over the Maxwell chip on the original model. Sorry, no…

Microsoft unveils the Surface Pro 6 and Surface Laptop 2, back in black

At an event in NYC today, Microsoft announced the latest in Surface line, including the Surface Pro 6 and Surface Laptop 2. The Surface is back in black. For the first time since the Surface Pro 2, you’ll be able to buy a Surface in black – including a matching Alcantara cover for the Pro. Ninjas, goths, and other lovers of darkness rejoice. For everyone else, the most palpable improvement is in the internals. The Pro is catching up to rest of the industry, using Intel’s 8th gen processors. These provide a significant improvement over the previous generations thanks a…

Medium published its first full-length novel, and it’s a Silicon Valley satire

Medium, the blogging platform developed by Twitter co-founder Evan Williams, today published its first full-length novel, which you can read now for free. The book in question is The Big Disruption by Jessica Powell, Google’s former head of PR. The novel is a satirical take on life in a major Silicon Valley company, if the description on its Medium page is anything to go by. It also has a kickass opening line: “The only animal left standing was a one-eyed sea lion named Fred.” The book is exclusive to the platform, meaning you can read it for free if you’re either…
