Wi-Fi Alliance gets rid of ‘802.11’ in favor of a much simpler naming system

For years, the names of Wi-Fi standards have been needlessly complex. It can be hard to remember which one your router supports – is it 802.11n or 802.11ac? Thankfully, the Wi-Fi Alliance – the organization which certifies Wi-Fi products – has introduced a simpler nomenclature that should make it easier to tell these standards apart. The rebranding applies to existing Wi-Fi standards as follows: Wi-Fi 5: Devices that support 802.11ac technology Wi-Fi 4: Devices that support 802.11n technology Older standards such as 802.11g, 802.11a, and 802.11b are not rebranded because they aren’t being used widely. The internet is due for a split. Here’s what you need to know.

We’ve come to accept the internet as a standard part of life, and as something as ubiquitous, unchanging, and universal as the very air we breathe. Eric Schmidt’s vision of Chinese division Eric Schmidt, former CEO of Google and executive chairman of Alphabet, recently attended a private event in San Francisco. There, when asked about the possibility of a “fractured internet” in the future, Schmidt contended: “I think the most likely scenario…

The Wall Street Journal reports that Nintendo is gearing up to build a revamped version of its portable Switch gaming console for the summer of 2019 – just over two years since its initial release. According to its sources, the company isn’t yet clear on which components will be upgraded for the next Switch – but it’s said to be considering including a ‘brighter, thinner, and more energy-efficient’ display. That could certainly be useful. Since we don’t have a lot to go on from WSJ’s brief report, we’ll have to speculate. I briefly imagined Nintendo introducing a higher resolution display…

ASMR videos could be a new digital therapy for mental health

Oct04

You may know “ASMR” as the niche genre of YouTube video which people watch on tablets and laptops to help them relax, perhaps before bed or in the lull of a Sunday afternoon. These videos typically involve someone role-playing a mundane professional service, such as giving you a haircut, a massage, or booking you in for a doctors’ appointment. The role-plays are usually performed in whispered voices, with the “ASMRtist” (the term for the creators of these videos) focused on building a feeling of intimacy and emphasizing any crisp sounds or slow hand movements. But what exactly is ASMR, and…
