The $899 Focal Elegia are closed-back headphones that promise open-back sound

Earlier this year, I raved about the Focal Clear, a $1,500 pair of audiophile-grade heaphones. Not only does it sound good enough to justify the price – assuming you’re the type of person to even consider dropping $1,500 on headphones – they are also unusually easy to power from a smartphone or laptop. After all, delving into this price category typically requires an additional investment in external amplification for decent sound. While the Clear can benefit from more power, didn’t need it nearly as much as most of its immediate competition. There’s just one problem: it’s an open-back headphone. That’s fine…

Crypto-jacking epidemic spreads to 30K routers across India

The spate of crypto-jacking plaguing the internet shows no sign of slowing down. After infesting hundreds of thousands of routers in Brasil with cryptocurrency mining malware, reports indicate hackers have compromized a further 30,000 routers across India. As Hard Fork previously reported, black-hat hackers are waging a war on the internet. They have already forced almost 280,000 MicroTik routers in Latin America to mine Monero (XMR) non-stop, so the discovery of the malware running on routers elsewhere is nothing but troubling. “The number of compromised routers [in India] has doubled in the past month,” wrote internet security unit Banbreach. “For the…

Sol Republic’s expensive-sounding earbuds are exciting, but flawed

Oct05
by Sindy Cator on October 5, 2018 at 12:25 pm
Posted In: Around the Web, Plugged

Even after testing several pairs of true wireless earbuds over the past couple of years, I haven’t yet come across a set that’s truly blown me away with its performance. That’s not surprising, given that it’s awfully hard to deliver great sound while also maintaining a solid wireless connection and running for hours with teeny-tiny batteries. Sol Republic’s new Amps Air 2.0 buds are a solid effort on all three fronts, particularly in the audio department. They’re a bit pricier than several other true wireless options, but they work well, look great, and pack a power bank to recharge your…
