Why social media payments and cryptocurrencies could be perfect partners

In late August, messaging giant LINE launched its own proprietary blockchain, the LINK chain, and its own cryptocurrency, the LINK token. While LINE is the first publicly traded company to have launched its own blockchain mainnet, it isn’t the first social media network to embrace cryptocurrencies. In this regard, it is joining the ranks of Kik, Kakao, Telegram, and (possibly) Facebook. All these companies have shown interest in adding cryptocurrency support on their networks, and some of them have already taken major steps. This all begs the question: At a time where cryptocurrencies are facing a major slump and there’s a lot of…

Google updated its wireless earbuds with a bold new feature — a wire

Many people (us included) expected Google to announce the new version of its wireless Pixel Buds at its hardware event. This didn’t happen. Instead we got the Google Pixel USB-C earbuds – a modified and wired version of its original pair. The new Pixel USB-C earbuds have generally same features as before. This includes the ability to trigger Google Assistant, pull up notifications, and use the real-time translate feature. As you’d expect, these features only work with Google’s Pixel phones. At first, I was baffled. Why wouldn’t Google release the Pixel Buds 2 and capitalize on the momentum of its Pixel 3…

Google Photos update makes an already smart app even smarter

Every year Google brings new features to its Photos app together with the Pixel launch. This year, Google introduced Live albums and new editing features in the app. Live albums is a feature that automatically adds photos of people and pets to an album as you take them. To create a live album, select ‘Automatically add photos of People & Pets’ option while creating it, and add people to it. This feature is rolling out to Android, iOS, and the web app in select countries.   The Google Photos app now has the ability to adjust depth in portrait photos,…

Why trying to regulate social media is a political mess

Oct10
by Sindy Cator on October 10, 2018 at 9:26 am
Posted In: Around the Web, syndication

Free speech is a key aspect of the internet, but it has become increasingly obvious that many online will push that freedom to extremes, leaving website comment sections, Twitter feeds and Facebook groups awash with racist, sexist, homophobic, or otherwise unpalatable opinions and vitriolic views, and obscene or shocking images or videos. The borderless nature of the internet, where a website may be hosted in one country, operated by staff in another, with comments left by readers in a third, poses a thorny problem for website operators and government agencies seeking to tackle the issue. In Britain, the telecommunications regulator…

Someone turned BrettKavanaugh.com into a resource for sexual assault survivors

Oct10
by Sindy Cator on October 10, 2018 at 8:54 am

Apparently, Brett Kavanaugh was too dumb to buy a domain with his name in it. Twitter is praising BrettKavanaugh.com as a brilliantly subtle act of resistance as the URL leads to a website with a list of sexual assault resources for survivors. whoever realized that Brett kavanaugh didn’t buy his own name as a url is a national hero https://t.co/v2G1IpiHuD — Kyra Parrow (@longlivekcx) October 9, 2018 https://t.co/t9EWEnyPKS is why you should always buy your name’s URL. — George Takei (@GeorgeTakei) October 10, 2018 https://t.co/3wQtBmf3VH Oh 🙌🏻🙌🏼🙌🏽🙌🏾🙌🏿 to whomever did this! Bravo!! — kamcc71 (@kamcc71) October 10, 2018 The site is…
