China’s ‘barrage videos’ are chaotic af — and say a lot about loneliness

Ideas are mysterious things. Sometimes the worst ones smell like solid gold, sometimes the profit-driving powerhouses masquerade as giant turds. Telling the difference, it seems, takes a certain measure of psychotic genius. Where, for example, is the hazy boundary of brilliance that separates the Slinky from, say, Picnic Pants? Maybe I just have no vision, but if you’d asked me to guess which one of the two was going to sell a few million units, I’m telling you right now, I would have guessed wrong. “Hey, I know,” said someone in a design meeting once. “How about we let users post live comments as…

Today in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Samsung announced the world’s first phone with four cameras on the back: the Galaxy A9. The company has aimed the mid-range device at photography enthusiasts. A few days ago, Samsung released the Galaxy A7 with three rear cameras. Now, it has gone all guns blazing with a quad-camera system on the back of the Galaxy A9. The four rear-side sensors are: 24-megapixel main sensor, f/1.7 10-megapixel telephoto sensor, f/2.4, 2x optical zoom 8-megapixel wide-angle sensor (120-degree), f/2.4 5-megapixel depth sensor, f/2.2 On the software side, the camera app has AI scene recognition to enhance photos. South Korean regulator warns of serious fallout if ICO ban lifts

South Korean lawmakers will decide the future of domestic initial coin offerings (ICOs) in November, but that hasn’t stopped its top financial regulator from lashing out at the cryptocurrency market one last time. Financial Services Commission (FSC) chairman Choi Jong-ku has continued to back his governments ban on public ICOs, enacted last September, saying it is just not worth the risk, Yonhap News reports. “Although many people call for the government to allow initial coin offerings, there are still uncertainties related to such a move as well as the possibility of serious fallouts,” Choi declared at a recent parliamentary audit meeting. Choi…

Pollinating drone bees can’t replace honey bees, ecologists calculate

The successful demonstration of remote-controlled “drones-bees” by Netherlands’ Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) has been making news since Tuesday. But the buzz surrounding the drone’s applications could be much hyped, according to at least two independent estimates by biologists. Many popular news websites reported that the university’s drone-bees could successfully replace real bees in pollination if they go extinct, but this might be optimistic. First, it’s not economically feasible to mass produce the robot insects. Second, there’s a flaw in understanding the science of pollination. The Netherlands is one of the largest exporters of food and agricultural products in…

In an effort to stimulate the wider adoption of cryptocurrency and blockchain tech, social trading platform eToro is making it significantly cheaper to invest in crypto-assets. The global company, which already boasts more than 10 million users, has reduced fees for spread trades on its platform by more than half for a number of assets, including Bitcoin. The updated spread trade fees can be found here. “We’re committed to supporting the mass adoption of crypto. We want to make it as simple and accessible as possible for investors to buy, sell or hold crypto,” said CEO Yoni Assia. “Cutting costs…
