Coinbase might nix its cryptocurrency index fund because investors weren’t interested

Coinbase has reportedly taken the decision to shut down its cryptocurrency index fund after lack of interest. An informant close to the matter told The Block the cryptocurrency exchange’s market-weighted index failed to attract enough interest from accredited investors. It appears the index did not perform as well as Coinbase forecast. The fund targeted at accredited investors required a minimum investment of $250,000. Coinbase recently turned its attention to more casual investors with its Coinbase Bundles. Similar to an index fund, but it is just a bundle of top cryptocurrencies of the day, investments start from as little as $25.…

How star-gazing helped scientists solve a centuries-old mystery

A bright new star appeared in the sky in June, 1670. It was seen by the Carthusian monk Père Dom Anthelme in Dijon, France, and astronomer Johannes Hevelius in Gdansk, Poland. Over the next few months, it slowly faded to invisibility. But in March 1671, it reappeared – now even more luminous and among the 100 brightest stars in the sky. Again it faded, and by the end of the summer it was gone. Then in 1672, it put in a third appearance, now only barely visible to the naked eye. After a few months it was gone again and…

Superstar plastic surgeon buys major South Korean cryptocurrency exchange

Just weeks before regulators decide the fate of domestic initial coin offerings (ICOs), one of South Korea’s largest cryptocurrency exchanges is changing hands. A consortium led by a superstar plastic surgeon has just bought a controlling stake in Bithumb for $353 million. Bithumb will now be directly managed by Singapore-based investment group BK Global Consortium, after it purchased a 50-percent stake (plus one share) from its largest shareholder, BTC Holdings Co., Bloomberg reports. To confuse matters, BK Global is also a major shareholder in BTC Holdings. BK Global have effectively ‘doubled-down’ on its investment, by selling itself enough shares to…

Hackers hide cryptocurrency mining malware in Adobe Flash updates

Oct12

Cryptocurrency scammers have gotten extra creative and are now hiding mining malware in legitimate updates of Adobe Flash Player. Researchers from cybersecurity firm Palo Alto Networks discovered a fake Flash updater which has been doing the rounds since early August. While it claims to install a legitimate Flash update, the malicious file sneaks in a cryptocurrency mining bot called XMRig (which mines privacy coin Monero). The fact the scam actually installs a genuine Flash update serves to distract the user from the deceitful goings-on. Many users may be unaware their CPU is now running at full tilt, mining cryptocurrency for…
