An overwhelming majority of cryptocurrency and blockchain projects (cryptoassets) on the market today are centralized in one way or another. Even more startling, 85 percent of development teams have the authority to alter their cryptoassets’ protocol at their own discretion. These are just some of the findings presented by blockchain and cryptocurrency research unit CryptoCompare, in its yearly taxonomy of the cryptocurrency sector. The study analyzed hundreds of cryptoassets with the intention of classifying cryptocurrency projects and blockchain platforms. Among other things, the report acts as a “decentralization thermometer” for the cryptocurrency market. It has indiciated a growing trend towards centralization,…

The skeptics had a point about Civil, the platform that wants to “fix” journalism. Just a week after it announced a partnership with publishing giant Forbes, Civil has declared the failure of its initial coin offering (ICO) and is refunding investors. Civil broke the news on its Medium blog late Tuesday evening, stating that less than 3,000 people were willing to back the ICO. In fact, TechCrunch reports that only 1,012 people actually bought any Civil tokens (CVL). A further 1,738 registered but never actually completed their purchase of CVL. Alas, the 1,012 that did actually buy some CVL tokens did not…

A few days ago, Facebook launched a device called Portal, which lets you make video calls to others via the company’s Messenger platform. Now, a new report suggests that the social networking company is working on a companion product for TVs that’s also designed for video calling, as well as tuning into Facebook Watch. The device, codenamed “Ripley“, is slated to launch in 2019, and combine a camera for calls, as well as components to support streaming video. It could represent a major step for Facebook to delve into the world of hardware – separate from its VR entity, Oculus There…

Q4 2018 internet report: Almost 4.2 billion humans are online

There have been some meaningful changes to social media numbers too, although some of the most interesting findings in this quarter’s report relate to declines in social media audiences, especially…
