Quotable

"The network news shows dedicated twenty times more coverage to Tiger Woods' affairs than they did to the Climategate scandal. They figure now that the cat is out of the bag, it's less interesting to nail cagey lying scientists with punchlines than it is to cage the big cat lying down with his club and females. The big bro.ad.cast media can't see the climate change forrest for the Woods." ~ Laughzilla

Twitter recently announced it’s rolling out a feature to provide context around deleted tweets – including who deleted them and why. It’s a small change, but it’s the latest in a series of moves Twitter is making in an effort to bolster transparency. You don’t want to see a Tweet you’ve reported, but you do want to know we’ve done something about it. And all those Tweets that break our rules? You should know we’ve done something about them too. Here’s what these Tweets will look like now. — Twitter Safety (@TwitterSafety) October 17, 2018 Up to now, deleted tweets would…

IBM just proved quantum computers can do things impossible for classical ones

A team of researchers from IBM, the University of Waterloo, and the Technical University of Munich (TUM) today published the results of an experiment proving a quantum computer can do things a classical one cannot. This may be a watershed moment in the history of computer science. The term for a clear case in which a quantum computer can perform computations or run algorithms that no classical computer, now or in the conceivable future, could is “quantum advantage.” Until now, it’s never been achieved. Sure, there are algorithms that, theoretically couldn’t be run on a classical system. But none of…

Netflix yesterday announced it would end its most popular original television program after its next season. Warning: This may make you cry. The Final Season, 2019. #OITNB pic.twitter.com/bUp2yY0aoK — Orange Is the New… (@OITNB) October 17, 2018 “Orange is The New Black” received wide-spread acclaim from critics and fans the moment Netflix debuted it back in 2013. The small-screen vehicle portrays life in a women’s prison, with a deft – if sometimes heavy – hand. Initially based on a true story, over the years it’s become a conduit for social commentary on everything from religious intolerance to partisan politics. The…

Rockstar Games controversy renews concern over ‘crunch culture’

On the cusp of releasing one of the biggest games of the year, Red Dead Redemption 2, developer Rockstar Games has been forced to allay fears it’s overworking its employees. It’s attempted to assure fans by allowing staff to speak directly about their experiences. The whole kerfuffle started thanks to an interview with Vulture, in which Rockstar VP Dan Houser said staff worked several “100-hour weeks” during the year in order to make the game perfect. Since there was no further clarification in the article itself, it’d be easy to assume he was talking about the entire development team. Given that,…
