OnePlus pushes its 6T launch event up to avoid Apple overlap

We’ve known for a while that the OnePlus 6T would launch on October 30. It’s set to be OnePlus’ most ambitious device to date, with pre-launch coverage pointing to a smaller notch, and in-display fingerprint reader, and official carrier support via T-Mobile. But then Apple announced it was hosting an event the same day. For all of OnePlus’ popularity, it’s still no Apple. Making matters worse, Apple’s event would be held in New York, meaning a lot of journalists would potentially have to double up on coverage. So OnePlus did the best it could do when dealt with a bad…

It’s only a matter of time until terrorists use AI as a weapon

Do you have a family emergency plan for autonomous weapon attacks? Stop, drop, and roll isn’t going to fool the drone tracking you. Duck and cover? Does it even matter? It’s hard to separate the hyperbole and science fiction-nonsense from practical concerns — for regular people — when it comes to autonomous weapons. Despite the late Stephen Hawking’s warnings, we’re probably decades away from the dystopian nightmare military experts predict the battlefield will become. And, it’s not like there’s a crime-syndicate of extremely well-financed super villains developing warehouses full of laser-equipped murder bots. It’s easy for the average individual to frame the…

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 posts $500M sales and it’s still a disappointment

Activision’s latest entry in the venerable Call of Duty franchise is cleaning house and then some. After only a few days on the market, Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 has already made half-a-billion dollars — and yet apparently that’s still not enough to impress some of the company’s investors. According to Activision, the number of players over the opening week is a new record for the series, and it had more airtime on Twitch than any other game in the series. It was actually quite dizzying how many streamers were playing the game. Even seasoned Fortnite veterans in my follow list were taking…

Redefining commerce: The underappreciated, but growing prominence of online marketplaces

Oct19
by Sindy Cator on October 19, 2018 at 3:43 pm

Since the launch of eBay in 1995, Etsy in 2005, AirBnB in 2008, Uber 2010 and so many other game changing startups, digital marketplaces have fundamentally transformed the commerce landscape and will only continue to do so. By 2020, marketplaces around the world will account for 40 percent of the global online retail market. Traditional retailers are also recognizing the opportunity, as well as the need, to invest in marketplaces if they’re to compete against the growing and expanding array of modern commerce brands, next-generation startups and of course, Amazon, Alibaba and other digital behemoths investing in marketplaces. And yet,…
