A team of AI researchers from India developed a tool to search for people in surveillance footage by height, clothing color, and gender. It’s like a search engine that can find people in a video. The scientists used deep learning (and Microsoft’s COCO dataset) to train a convolutional neural network (CNN) how to recognize certain human features, called soft biometrics, using computer vision. Basically, you can tell this AI some details about the person you’re looking for and it’ll scour whatever video you give it. For example, a request for “females wearing red shirts who are 153 cm tall” would,…

Swiss cryptocurrency exchange Trade.io claims hackers have stolen nearly $8M million worth of cryptocurrency directly from its cold storage devices, supposedly kept under lock and key in a bank. The team behind the exchange confirmed the losses in a message posted to its Medium blog on Sunday. “Around 08:40 EST, our security team was alerted to a large transaction from one of our wallets held in cold storage,” the announcement reads. “We can confirm that […] 50M TIO ($7.8M) […] being held in cold storage has been withdrawn, and an estimated 1.3M ($201K) of that had been transferred to both…

In fact, a major attack on Atlanta put every metro official on notice that hackers don’t balk at attacking cities, and it’s not a matter of “if” but “when” they find an opening. Not surprisingly, one of the key entry points for these attacks is (drumroll please) … Phishing! By most accounts, over 90 percent of breaches start with phishing. The criminal…
