Pusher today announced the general availability of its chat API, Chatkit, which allows developers to quickly introduce real-time conversational experiences to their mobile and web applications. Chatkit, which has been in beta since last November, is an all-in-one suite of tools that cover most edge cases when it comes to real-time chatting. Out of the box, it allows developers to support rich media messaging, read receipts, and permissions. In addition to the user-facing elements, Chatkit also includes sophisticated tools to aid developers during the building and deployment process, thanks to a visual debug tool called Instance Inspector. The API also…

Why poor teens haven’t abandoned Facebook

A Pew Research study published earlier this year showed that, statistically, a large number of teenagers from families with lower-than-average annual income still use Facebook. While 36 percent of teens from families making $75,000 or more per year, and 56 percent of teens from the $30,ooo-$74,999 range said they used Facebook, the number rose to a whopping 70 percent when it came to teens in families earning $30,000 or less. The number is surprising considering that the rest of the research showed Facebook usage had dropped overall among teenagers in favor of Instagram, YouTube, and Snapchat. This isn’t a recent development, either; Another Pew…

Facebook Ad Library: Only 3 “Brexit” ads for whole month. Yeah, right!

Facebook may well look back on 2018 as its annus horribilis. From the Cambridge Analytica  scandal in March, to a data breach affecting 29 million users in September, from accusations of fraud over misrepresentation of video viewing figures, to claims that it is destroying the very fabric of society, the social network’s reputation has suffered a battering. Much of this criticism is entirely warranted. But Facebook’s ham-fisted attempts to address the most pressing concerns around disinformation have fallen flat. Earlier this month the ad giant rolled out new transparency rules that would force political advertisers in the UK to publicly…

Netflix’s new releases are headed straight for the cinema. The streaming platform announced the move on Twitter, marking a seismic shift in their business model. Netflix has released original content in theaters before, but this will be the first time the films are not simultaneously available on the site. ROMA will be the first, and will be released in a selection of cinemas in New York and Los Angeles on Wednesday, November 21st. Those hoping to catch it streaming on the platform will have to wait until December 14th, when it will also receive a wider theatrical release. Vanity Fair wrote the…
