There are 13 countries in world that have built and launched satellites into space and 72 countries have their own space agencies. But Kyrgyzstan isn’t one of them, yet. In the next two years, Kyrgyzstan could have its first space program, completely powered by a team of a dozen women aged from 17 to 25 years old. The young women behind Kyrgyz Space Program are challenging gender norms by learning engineering and coding to build the country’s first cube satellite (CubeSat) — a miniature design that costs $150,000 to produce. The program is part of the free satellite-building and robotics course…

Welcome to Plugged Basics, a collection of tips, tricks, guides, and advice on how to get the most out of your gadgets, apps, and other stuff. At least once a month, I google how to take a screenshot on my Samsung Galaxy phone, which is especially embarrassing considering that I’m a tech reporter. But many of the guides I find have ridiculous suggestions on how to take screenshots, which is definitely the reason why I keep forgetting. In reality there’s only one decent method. That’s why I’ve made this humble guide, to help me remember, something that’ll hopefully be handy…

Why digital tools you use in your personal life should be on your CV

I entered the workforce in 1998 during the midst of the dotcom bubble. To stay relevant in a highly competitive and unpredictable market, I found myself constantly updating my resume with software proficiencies I thought companies would find desirable. However, none of the software proficiencies I included in my resume proved to be applicable or remotely useful in my personal life. There was a clear separation of church and state as it applied to the qualifications in my personal and professional lives. Software skills, while arguably just as important for job applications today, if not more, are taking on a…

Would you wear a shirt if the label said it was made of shit? Chances are you’re currently wearing something made of cotton. Ever since the fifth millennium BC, people have used the natural fiber derived from the cotton plant in textile production, and it’s now an enormous industry. Currently, the plant is growing on about 2.5 percent of the world’s arable land to supply the world with 25 million tons it uses every year. That land use comes at a cost. First of all, cotton needs water to grow. The WWF estimated that around 10,000 liters of water are…

This Day In Deals is our new section where we share a historical fact and the day’s best deal – and try to connect them. The aim? To enrich ourselves financially, and you spiritually. You know Simon & Garfunkel. Everyone does. There are literal bricks that can probably hum along to Mrs. Robinson.  While you might be familiar with the folk group’s music, you might not know that today is one of its member’s birthdays. So, let’s take this moment to all wish Art Garfunkel a happy birthday! Happy birthday, Art! Actually, while we’re at it, let’s share a picture of…
