Samsung’s folding phone is a marvel but Nintendo’s DS is still cooler

Samsung today unveiled it’s highly-anticipated folding phone, powered by an all new “Infinity Flex Display.” It’s certainly the pinnacle of screen technology. It’s also a dead-ringer for Nintendo’s DS – for now, anyway Samsung wasn’t at liberty to show off the device’s form-factor today at its developers conference. So it ended up showing off the new Infinity Flex Display on a folding screen inside of a box. Here it is open in tablet form: The device is supposed to go into mass production in “the coming months,” according to Samsung, but we can’t help but speculate that the South Korean…

Instagram’s rumored School Stories could be cool — with rigorous moderation

Nov07

Word on the street is that Instagram is testing a new, collaborative kind of Story — specifically, a kind which would be used within schools. While it’s in no way confirmed the app will ever have this feature, it could turn out to be a positive thing for students, if done properly. Tipster Jane Manchun Wong was, as usual, the first person to spot the new feature, and was also the one to point out the accompanying code, which reads “School stories are manually reviewed to make sure the community is safe.” Instagram is working on school story. pic.twitter.com/wJc5oSJtyM — Jane…

AI is the prescription for overworked doctors

Nov07
by Sindy Cator on November 7, 2018 at 6:30 pm
Posted In: Around the Web, artificial intelligence

The problem with healthcare is simple: there’s not enough of it. In a perfect world we’d all have our own personal physicians like the Queen. But in reality, the average doctor sees thousands of patients a year. Solving this problem could take decades. Unless, of course, someone were to “hack” the system itself using artificial intelligence. There’s no immediate answer to the global shortage of doctors. Lowering the bar of entry won’t work, and there’s not much hope humans will suddenly take better care of themselves. Fixing the problem, in the short-term, involves empowering the doctors we have today with…

Review: Dell’s outstanding XPS 13 made me respect small laptops

Nov07
by Sindy Cator on November 7, 2018 at 4:20 pm

I’ve always felt that bigger is better when it comes to laptops. Bring on the behemoths, I say. Hand me that Acer Predator or give me that Alienware 17. So it’s a bit of a shock (for me as well) that I’m convinced my favorite laptop of 2018 will ultimately be Dell’s little XPS 13. The XPS 13 is a tricky laptop to pigeonhole. I once tried to explain why the BMW M3 was a masterpiece among cars to someone who only understood the language of raw American muscle machines. It’s no less difficult for me now to say the…

Salesforce thinks it can fight spam with blockchain

Nov07

You probably receive email marketing that was deployed on a Salesforce system multiple times a week, without even knowing it. Well, the cloud-based customer relationship management firm is now intent on using blockchain to curb the number of spam emails finding their way to inboxes. The US Patent and Trademark office published a document yesterday that outlines Salesforce’s concept of using blockchain to ensure the authenticity of emails sent to customers. Presumably, this system will only work for clients that currently use one of Salesforce’s customer relationship management products. However, this is not clarified in the patent. The system appears…
