Social trading platform eToro is kicking off a new $1 million fund to support research on blockchain use cases for reducing wealth inequality – and it is recruiting partners. The initiative, called GoodDollar, aims to create an entirely open-source community project. The concept is to develop a blockchain-powered wealth redistribution system and lay the foundations for open, universal basic income scheme. Today, the immensely popular social coding platform GitHub announced it now hosts over 100 million repositories. In addition, the platform announced new information about its userbase. GitHub now supports 31 million developers, who collectively have created over 1.1 billion contributions. These contributions have taken place across a variety of projects, both closed and open-source. GitHub hosts the majority of major open-source projects, including WordPress, Drupal, and TensorFlow. According to GitHub, the most popular project of 2018 was Microsoft’s Visual Studio Code, a cross-platform text editor built with web technologies with the Electron engine. An Australian researcher has received a prestigious award from the nation’s top computer society, specifically for his pioneering contributions to anonymizing cryptocurrency transactions. Associate Professor Joseph Liu of Monash University has been named the Australian Computer Society’s (ACS) researcher of the year at its annual disruptor awards last week. ACS specifically recognized Liu for his groundbreaking blockchain research, and it is surely deserved. He’s been developing boundary-pushing cryptographic algorithms since 2004, and is credited with playing a critical role in shaping the anonymity-focused cryptocurrency Monero. His doctorate thesis actually centered on his work with a cryptographic system known as Linkable Ring…
