For most people, playing Call of Duty‘s campaign mode is as close as they’ll get to joining the military. For them, the everyday realities of uniformed service are unknown. Leon D.’s pornographic pictures showed a church window across the street, visible through the window in the back of the room. Together with Dutch police, researchers wrote an algorithm that made use of Google Earth images to find that exact same church window. It located the…

This week Russia has stepped up its war on anonymity. After an attempt last April to block the service, on Friday a court in Moscow ordered encrypted messaging app Telegram to pay 800,000 rouble – around €10,600 – for failing to hand over users’ information. But not content with that, on Tuesday, Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev signed a new decree that will force mobile phone operators to identify and verify every messaging app used by their customers. Every time a Russian mobile phone user signs up to a new messaging service, that service provider will have to contact the mobile network…

Social trading platform eToro is kicking off a new $1 million fund to support research on blockchain use cases for reducing wealth inequality – and it is recruiting partners. The initiative, called GoodDollar, aims to create an entirely open-source community project. The concept is to develop a blockchain-powered wealth redistribution system and lay the foundations for open, universal basic income scheme. As part of this mission, the $1 million experiment will focus on researching ways of implementing a cryptocurrency that pays social interest to those in need. “The success of new technologies should not be measured only by their ability…
