Amidst all the talk about talent shortages in science and technology, an even more serious shortfall has flown under the radar: up-and-coming company leaders. According to LinkedIn, companies worldwide consider leadership development their top talent challenge. Eighty-six percent say it’s “urgent” or “important” that they stock their leadership pipelines, yet a similar 85 percent say they’re struggling to do so. If the problem isn’t one of awareness, what’s stopping today’s executives from grooming the next generation? In a phrase, shifting skill sets. Ironically, as technology advances, “soft” skills are edging out technical skills as those most important for modern leaders.…

A computer virus that mines the anonymous cryptocurrency Monero has been ranked as the sixth most significant malware to hit Switzerland in the first half of this year. Swiss researchers also discovered that cybersecurity threats once focused on breaking into online banking services have pivoted to more efficiently attack cryptocurrency exchanges. These revelations come by way of a new paper released by Switzerland’s Reporting and Analysis Centre for Information Assurance (MELANI), a government agency. The research details the most critical cyberthreats to recently hit the Swiss internet, reports FinanceFeeds. MELANI found seminal e-banking trojan Dridex has been ramping up its crypto-focused operations. It actually…

SEC charges EtherDelta founder with running unregistered securities exchange

In what could prove to be a groundbreaking case, the US Securities and Exchange Commission has charged the founder of cryptocurrency trading platform EtherDelta, Zachary Coburn, with running an “unregistered national securities exchange.” The order claims EtherDelta facilitated more than 3.6 million orders for ERC20 tokens (a popular Ethereum-based token protocol), many of which purportedly fall under local federal securities laws. “EtherDelta offered trading of various digital asset securities and failed to register as an exchange or operate pursuant to an exemption,” the order reads. The filing further notes that EtherDelta purportedly brokered most of these transactions after the SEC issued…

Two principals at a Chinese school have been caught using their employer’s electricity to mine Ethereum, according to local news outlet HK01. The report details how employees at Puman Middle School in Hunan province had been witnessing excessive noise from computers over the last few months – day and night, even during the holidays. The school’s IT network also slowed to a noticeable level over the same time period, making it difficult for the school’s staff to do their jobs. As the faculty could no longer stand the noise and slow network, they sought answers to rectify the situation. What…

Hackers hide cryptocurrency mining malware in Windows installation files

Nov08

Crypto-jacking schemes are getting more intricate by the day. It appears hackers are now disguising cryptocurrency mining malware and passing it off as legitimate Windows installation packages. Researchers say the malicious software, more commonly known as Coinminer, was specifically designed to fly under the radar. What makes the attack particularly difficult to detect is that it uses a series of obfuscation methods. The discovery comes from security firm Trend Micro, which has since documented the attack vector at more length. “The malware arrives on the victim’s machine as a Windows Installer MSI file, which is notable because Windows Installer is…
