Review: Aukey’s KM-G3 is a great entry-level mechanical gaming keyboard

Nov10

Mechanical keyboards are the kind of product the adage “you get what you pay for” was created to describe. The best cost $200 or more. Quality gets pretty hit-or-miss once you dip below the $100 range. And at less than $75 you can assume you’re getting something from the bargain bin. Luckily, there’s a little-known company named Aukey quietly changing that with its pretty-damn-good $65 KM-G3. The KM-G3 is a blue switch (Outemu, not Cherry MX), 104-Key RGB Backlit Gaming Keyboard with Customizable Lighting Effects. What that means for non-techies is that it’s a loud, semi-stiff keyboard that’s way better…

Prima Games to cease publishing its strategy guides after 28 years

Nov09
by Sindy Cator on November 9, 2018 at 11:27 pm

Reports today revealed that Prima Games, the company behind those strategy guides you see at every game store, was shutting down after almost three decades. It’s the end of an era, truly. Prima game guides have been around since 1990. Originally famous for its massive print guides (I think I could have used the Skyrim guide to play Whac-a-mole), Prima had since branched out into digital guides and strategy guides. But apparently that wasn’t enough to keep it afloat. According to an internal memo by Ian Hudson, CEO of parent imprint Dorling Kindersley: During a year-long extensive review, many new ways…

Incrementing Months and Years

Nov09
by Sindy Cator on November 9, 2018 at 8:55 pm
Posted In: Around the Web, keyboard shortcut

As you know, I love keyboard shortcuts. But I hate entering dates. So I created this little helper. In my new accounting system, they also have shortcut keys for incrementing weeks, months, and years. I don’t have much use for incrementing weeks, but I could kick myself for not thinking of the others. Plus Alt+semi-colon is just sitting there doing nothing.

Public Sub IncrementMonth()

    On Error Resume Next

    gclsAppEvents.AddLog "%;", "IncrementMonth"

    If IsDate(ActiveCell.Value) Then
        ActiveCell.Value = DateSerial(Year(ActiveCell.Value), Month(ActiveCell.Value) + 1, Day(ActiveCell.Value))
    ElseIf IsTextTime(ActiveCell.Text) Then
        ActiveCell.Value = ActiveCell.Value + 1 / 24
    End If

End Sub

Public Sub DecrementMonth()

    On Error Resume Next

    gclsAppEvents.AddLog "+%;", "DecrementMonth"

    If IsDate(ActiveCell.Value) Then
        ActiveCell.Value = DateSerial(Year(ActiveCell.Value), Month(ActiveCell.Value) - 1, Day(ActiveCell.Value))
    ElseIf IsTextTime(ActiveCell.Text) Then
        ActiveCell.Value = ActiveCell.Value - 1 / 24
    End If

End Sub

Public Sub IncrementYear()

    On Error Resume Next

    gclsAppEvents.AddLog "^%;", "IncrementYear"

    If IsDate(ActiveCell.Value) Then
        ActiveCell.Value = DateSerial(Year(ActiveCell.Value) + 1, Month(ActiveCell.Value), Day(ActiveCell.Value))
    ElseIf IsTextTime(ActiveCell.Text) Then
        ActiveCell.Value = ActiveCell.Value + 1
    End If

End Sub

Public Sub DecrementYear()

    On Error Resume Next

    gclsAppEvents.AddLog "^+%;", "DecrementYear"

    If IsDate(ActiveCell.Value) Then
        ActiveCell.Value = DateSerial(Year(ActiveCell.Value) - 1, Month(ActiveCell.Value), Day(ActiveCell.Value))
    ElseIf IsTextTime(ActiveCell.Text) Then
        ActiveCell.Value = ActiveCell.Value - 1
    End If

End Sub

How AI will make the world safer for sex workers and their clients

Nov09
by Sindy Cator on November 9, 2018 at 7:54 pm
Posted In: Around the Web, artificial intelligence

The future of sex work, despite what you may have heard from frantic journalists decrying the death of human interaction, is not robots. It’s humans. But those humans, and their clients, will rely on AI for their safety. Well, the lucky ones will. It’s difficult to put the global plight of sex workers in perspective. A large portion of “research” into the subject is conducted halfheartedly, often with complete disregard for the scientific method, and little or no input from actual sex workers. Consider this quote from retired sex worker Maggie McNeill’s New York Times op-ed: Imagine a study of the…
