Following a series of cryptocurrency-related hackings on high-profile accounts (including retail giant Target and some politicians), Twitter has finally addressed the Bitcoin giveaway scam epidemic on its platform. In an email to Hard Fork, a spokesperson for Twitter confirmed – that in addition to Target’s profile – a number of accounts had been hacked to promote Bitcoin scams. The spokesperson added Twitter has been in touch with Target with regards to the incident (as also corroborated by the retailer). “We’ve been in close contact with Target this morning and can also confirm that their account was inappropriately accessed for approximately…

Is your computer suddenly sluggish and hot all the time? You might have fallen victim to this new Russian malware designed to steal your computing power to secretly mine cryptocurrency. Researchers from McAfee labs have discovered a new breed of crypto-jacking malware which cannibalizes your computing power to mine Monero or Zcash. What is particularly interesting is that the malware – dubbed WebCobra – will install a different miner depending on the configuration of your machine. Upon close analysis, the researchers noticed the attackers are distributing the software through a malicious Microsoft installer package. Interestingly, the package was programmed to…

Facebook and Airbnb revise sexual harassment policies after Google protests

Earlier this month, thousands of Google employees walked out of their offices, in part to protest company policies regarding sexual harassment, transparency, and the handling thereof. CEO Sundar Pichai acknowledged the protesters’ concerns and implied management was working on fixing the policies that had led to them. Last week, it was revealed that not only was Google reversing course on forced arbitration, but other companies were starting to wake up to the fact that it’s a terrible, terrible policy. Just last Friday, Facebook joined the growing group of companies who have eliminated it from their company mandate, saying: …we are…

The latest in a string of companies posting cryptocurrency mining losses has come from Japanese internet giant, GMO. The internet infrastructure business posted a loss of over $5.5 million dollars for its cryptocurrency mining division for the third quarter of this year, according to its recent financial report. There are no signs that the mining industry is improving either, GMO’s third quarter loss is over $2 million greater than the loss the company posted Q2. According to the report, GMO mined a total of 1,590 Bitcoin and 25 Bitcoin Cash during Q3, but that wasn’t enough to draw a profit…

Target has officially confirmed its Twitter account got hacked to promote a malicious cryptocurrency giveaway scam, promising over $31 million worth of Bitcoin to naive investors. “Early this morning, Target’s Twitter account was inappropriately accessed” a company spokesperson told Hard Fork in an email. “The access lasted for approximately half an hour and one fake tweet was posted during that time about a Bitcoin scam.” “We’re in close contact with Twitter, have deleted the tweet and have locked the account while we investigate further,” the retail giant further told Hard Fork.
