Christie’s auctioneers record record $318M in art sales on blockchain

Major auction house Christie’s has made history by tracking $317.8 million worth of art auctions via blockchain, as one of the greatest privately owned collections of American Modernist art went under the hammer overnight. In a record-breaking slew of auctions, 42 pieces were sold, with details of the auctions recorded on a permissioned (private) implementation of the Ethereum blockchain managed by software company Artory. A Christie’s press release (spotted by Artlyst) noted the record sales mark the first time an art auction at this price level has been written to a blockchain. Bidders hailing from 23 countries competed to own…

This magical device can turn your table into a touchscreen

Technology fucking rocks. Just when I think I’m numb to new things, along comes the Puppy Cube and blows my mind. Basically, it’s a cuboid-shaped projector. Yep, despite the name, it’s not actually a cube. Still, rather than just being a normal projector, the Puppy Cube has some tricks up its sleeve. It runs an Android OS and – here’s the magical part – when it’s stood up, the surface it shines light onto becomes a touchscreen. Then when you lie it down on its back, it functions like a normal projector. And, even better, it’s battery powered – meaning you can use…

International Bitcoin miners vanish after stacking up $1.5M debt in Sweden

Sweden‘s northernmost county opened its arms to two cryptocurrency mining firms earlier this year – but it might now be regretting the decision. The county of Norrbotten, Sweden is playing host to a cryptocurrency mining mystery. Two cryptocurrency mining operations have shut up shop and disappeared, leaving only unpaid bills behind, local news outlet Sveriges Radio reports. One of them, Miami-based mining firm NGDC, had set up its operations to begin mining Bitcoin. However, the business shut its doors in Autumn as its electricity supply had been turned off due to unpaid bills, totaling over $1.5 million. The NGDC’s energy…

Bitcoin beats iTunes vouchers as preferred payment for Australian scammers

In what could be one of the strangest milestones in cryptocurrency history, Bitcoin is now the preferred payment method of Australian tax scammers, surpassing iTunes vouchers for the first time. The Australian Tax Office (ATO) has fielded reports of over 28,000 attempted scams since July. It estimated Australians have paid close to $1 million to the scammers in the past three months alone, reports local outlet ABC. Tax scammers are notorious in Australia, known for preying upon migrants by demanding payments for fake government debts. They typically threaten victims with imprisonment and even deportation if the targets don’t give up…

Alex Jones’ Infowars store was infected with credit card skimming software

Nov14

Infowars is best known as the fake news platform used by beetroot-red nutjob Alex Jones to spout wild conspiracies and defame grieving parents. But did you also know it boasts an online store where you can buy vitamins, “neutraceuticals,” and garish right-wing t-shirts? I mention the retail bit because, according to ZDNet and Dutch security researcher, Willem de Groot, it was recently the site of a particularly nasty Magecart infection, which hoovered up the details of roughly 1,600 customers. Magecart is a strain of malware that targets online retail platforms. It works by silently recording the payment card details submitted…
