Elon Musk’s bid to buy Twitter has divided the platform’s users. While fans crave his business acumen and free speech absolutism, critics renounce his biases and record of censorship. The simmering discontent at Twitter has sparked a wave of interest in decentralized alternatives. Advocates say the approach will shift control from central governance to users. A prominent proponent of the model is Mastodon. The open-source social network this week capitalized on a surge of interest by launching a free Android app. What is Mastodon? Mastodon consists of independent communities spread across different servers, which means no single company — or…

Why Dorsey is joining Musk in criticizing Twitter’s board

It was the Easter weekend, and thankfully, the Elon Musk-Twitter saga took a break. But we finally got to hear something about recent developments from Jack Dorsey, Twitter’s co-founder, ex-CEO, and outgoing board member, who weighed in on the issue with some non-direct tweets. Some of them were directed toward the company’s board, and how it has operated over the years, and some of them talked about the potential decentralization of social media. While the Bitcoin evangelist doesn’t fully agree with Musk on how Twitter should be operated, there’s some similarity in their vision. Let’s see how their visions compare.…

The “brain in a jar” is a thought experiment of a disembodied human brain living in a jar of sustenance. The thought experiment explores human conceptions of reality, mind, and consciousness. This article will explore a metaphysical argument against artificial intelligence on the grounds that a disembodied artificial intelligence, or a “brain” without a body, is incompatible with the nature of intelligence.[1] The brain in a jar is a different inquiry than traditional questions about artificial intelligence. The brain in a jar asks whether thinking requires a thinker. The possibility of artificial intelligence primarily revolves around what is necessary to make…

This article is part of our coverage of the latest in AI research. Artificial intelligence research lab OpenAI made headlines again, this time with DALL-E 2, a machine learning model that can generate stunning images from text descriptions. DALL-E 2 builds on the success of its predecessor DALL-E and improves the quality and resolution of the output images thanks to advanced deep learning techniques. The announcement of DALL-E 2 was accompanied by a social media campaign by OpenAI’s engineers and its CEO, Sam Altman, who shared wonderful photos created by the generative machine learning model on Twitter. DALL-E 2 shows how far…
