Phone makers, stop lying about how good your cameras are

Samsung has been caught for the second time trying to pass off photos from a DSLR camera as image samples from its phones. In the latest instance, its Malaysian division was spotted using a shot taken a year ago by photographer Dunja Djudjic to talk up the capabilities of its mid-range Galaxy A8 Star. The company previously pulled a similar stunt for its Galaxy A8 in Brazil in August. That month, Huawei was also caught red-handed because an actor in its TV commercial inadvertently exposed the trickery with a behind-the-scenes photo that showed a DSLR camera being used to capture a…

November in Africa: Spotify expands and drones protect wildlife

Too often in these monthly wraps we look at the negative side of tech in Africa, usually what governments are doing to milk the sector for all it is worth. Last month, however, we saw the potential for tech on the continent, and how if it is employed in the right way it can have really meaningful impact across a variety of spaces. ICT for development, or tech for good, was at the top of the agenda. In Niger, drones are to be used for surveillance to protect wildlife in nature reserves from poachers. In other good news from the…

Qualcomm is using ultrasound tech for a better in-display fingerprint sensor

This year, we saw quite a few phones ditch the traditional fingerprint sensor for one that fits under the screen. Last night, Qualcomm released a new in-display fingerprint sensor to help popularize this technology. The sensors used on the Vivo U21X, the Mate P20 Pro, and, the OnePlus 6T, simply aren’t as usable or fast as they should be. With these devices, you often have to press down harder than usual, or place your thumb at a certain angle to unlock them. These sensors mostly rely on an “image” of your thumb or finger to unlock the phone and theoretically,…

Alphabet’s drone division will begin trialing aerial deliveries in Finland next year

In July, I wrote about how Wing – one of Google X’s pet drone projects – “graduated” to become a full company under the Alphabet banner. Now, after months of testing its drone delivery service in Australia, the company is expanding to Europe with a trial planned in Finland next year. Wing’s official website noted that the weather in Finland would help set a benchmark for the company’s delivery services: Finns are internationally renowned for being early-adopters of new technologies, and we’re looking forward to working with the community and local businesses to find the best way to implement our…
