"The fact that America is still the world's superpower, and that the average American doesn't know more about the world than the average first grader, says a lot more about the power of having a strong economy that it does about the usefulness of studying geography and politics." ~ Yasha Harari

Tumblr reemerges on the App Store after controversial NSFW purge

Dec13

After a turbulent few weeks, it appears Tumblr may finally be back on track. Its app has now reappeared in the iOS App Store. The company’s recent moves to purge adult content from its site have been met with stiff resistance from users, but it appears it might have worked out in the company’s favor. For almost a month, Tumblr has maintained a page on its help site about the iOS app, promising that its staff was working to restore the app and giving more background on why it was removed in the first place. Last night, that page was…

Cryptocurrency scammers target schools, hospitals, government offices with bomb threats

Dec13

A dangerous email scam appears to be targeting businesses, schools, hospitals, and government buildings across the US in an attempt to extort bitcoin (BTC) with a bomb threat. A spokesperson for the FBI provided TNW with the following statement: We are aware of the recent bomb threats made in cities around the country, and we remain in touch with our law enforcement partners to provide assistance. As always, we encourage the public to remain vigilant and to promptly report suspicious activities which could represent a threat to public safety. What you need to know: It appears the threat is being…

YouTube Rewind 2018 hit with most dislikes ever thanks to its too-clean imagery

Dec13
by Sindy Cator on December 13, 2018 at 7:21 pm
Posted In: Around the Web, Google

This year’s YouTube Rewind just surpassed a Justin Bieber song to become the most-disliked video ever made on the platform. With over 10 million dislikes, the like-to-dislike ratio would seem to be a message from the fans to the company that the squeaky-clean, frenetically scripted attempt at positivity isn’t what they want. Within hours of the video first dropping last week, critical videos began cropping up. Some re-edited the video to just include YouTubers they recognized — presumably to make some kind of point about the relative obscurity of some of the creators compared with the ones who weren’t there.…

Amazon cozies up to ICE as Congress cries foul

Dec13
by Sindy Cator on December 13, 2018 at 7:13 pm

In a country where consumers (read: taxpayers) already have little-to-no privacy, it seems outrageous that billion-dollar technology companies can make closed-door deals with law enforcement agencies without US Congressional oversight. Yet here we are. Amazon has reportedly committed to providing ICE with “the best technology,” which sounds like it should be a good thing. ICE, which stands for Immigration Customs Enforcement, is an agency tasked with keeping US borders safe. Unfortunately, ICE and Amazon don’t seem to be interested in addressing the privacy issues surrounding certain aspects of their partnership. And Congress members are frustrated over the blatant disregard for…

Sales processes need a tech upgrade, and these technologies will provide it in 2019

Dec13
by Sindy Cator on December 13, 2018 at 5:33 pm
Posted In: Around the Web, Contributors

Sales robots will replace salespeople. Machines will sell machines to other machines. Efficiency will peak, and humans will no longer be necessary to the sales process. That’s what the technology evangelists would have people believe, at least. The truth is far more nuanced. As dramatic as the effects of better sales tools are, humans will continue to take center stage in sales. Rather than replace humans, new sales technologies will make them better at what they already do.   Many effective tools are already available, but companies consistently overlook them. They make excuses about cost and implementation without fully understanding…
