Nintendo Switch’s US sales surpass the PS4 and Xbox at the same age

Nintendo today revealed the Switch has now sold over 8.7 million units at the 21-month mark in the US, more than both the PlayStation 4 and the Xbox One did when they were the same “age.” Given how little we know about the sales of at least one of the consoles past that mark, this might be the last time we get to compare the three reliably. The information comes from data analysis company The NPD Group, which tracks video game sales. The little hybrid console also outsold one of its predecessors, the Nintendo Wii, within the same timeframe, and…

2019 will be a pivotal year for Southeast Asian tech startups

With a rising middle class and a booming tech startup scene, Southeast Asia (SEA) sits where China did 10 years ago — on the cusp of a major economic boom fueled by the tech industry. The only questions over the last few years have been: When will the tipping point be reached, and when will SEA mature from a promising regional market into the next big world economy? I’ve seen promising signs that in 2019, our region may finally reach that tipping point. The 10 nations in SEA — Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, Cambodia, Vietnam, Thailand, Brunei, Laos, Myanmar, and the…

Teacher of the year for life: Professor hired mercenaries to rescue student from ISIS

Charlotta Turner, a chemistry professor at Sweden’s Lund University, hired a team of mercenaries to extricate a student from ISIS-occupied territory when she found out they were going to be late on an assignment. Now we know exactly who this mug belongs to: The extraordinary events occurred in 2014 when graduate student Firas Jumaah left Sweden in response to a family emergency: ISIS had occupied a village adjacent to his hometown, where his wife and two children remained. Jumaah told Lunds University Magazine (LUM): My wife was panicked, everyone was shocked at how IS behaved. I took the first plane…

Moving beyond ‘all models are wrong’ and into rational AI

Dec18
by Sindy Cator on December 18, 2018 at 9:08 pm
Posted In: Around the Web, artificial intelligence, Insider

The cold, calculating ‘mind’ of a machine has no capacity for emotion. Alexa doesn’t care if you call it names. DeepMind’s AlphaGo will never actually taste the sweet joy of victory. Despite this, they’re more like humans than you might think. They’re nearly always wrong and virtually incapable of being rational. British statistician George Box famously stated “all models are wrong, but some are useful” in a research paper published in 1976. While he was referring to statistical models, it’s well-accepted that the aphorism applies to computer models as well, and thus it makes sense from an AI point of view.…
