"The network news shows dedicated twenty times more coverage to Tiger Woods' affairs than they did to the Climategate scandal. They figure now that the cat is out of the bag, it's less interesting to nail cagey lying scientists with punchlines than it is to cage the big cat lying down with his club and females. The big bro.ad.cast media can't see the climate change forrest for the Woods." ~ Laughzilla

Researchers developed an AI robot that can assist with childbirth

Instead of looking up at the sky to see whether you need an umbrella, people increasingly ask virtual assistants such as Alexa. And they may be wise to do so. AI methods are powerful – capable of anything from analyzing astrophysical data to detecting tumors or helping to manage diabetes. An algorithm that analyses shopping patterns recently detected that a teenage girl was pregnant, earlier than her father did. So could childbirth be next for Al? The most popular AI subset is “machine learning”, which allows a machine to learn a task without being explicitly programmed. This is achieved by…

The Fnatic Clutch 2 is a stylish and comfortable gaming mouse for under $60

As vertical mice are beginning to reach a zenith, there’s still a place for more traditional-looking offerings. This week we’re taking a look at Fnatic’s Clutch 2 – a right-handed wired gaming mouse that’s an unabashed all-rounder, yet is sufficiently customizable for even the most competitive of gamers. The first thing that strikes you about the Clutch 2 is that it’s supremely comfortable to hold. Unlike other gaming mice I’ve previously tried – like the Alienware AW958 – it’s not too big, and its gentle contours grip the hand nicely. Its myriad of buttons are easily reachable, meaning you don’t…

End of year crypto roundup: How did Binance Coin perform in 2018?

Dec20

Binance Coin (BNB) is the namesake cryptocurrency underlying the world’s largest virtual currency exchange desk, Binance. It was launched in July 2017 as an ERC20 token based on the Ethereum blockchain, raising $15 million for Binance in its initial coin offering (ICO). The cryptocurrency industry is (in-)famous for making and breaking fortunes in a jiffy. But even in this volatile environment, Binance has managed to stand out. Founded in July 2017, it was already the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange desk (by trading volume) as of April 2018; taking less than ten months to get there. This stark rise made BNB — which is…

Flights at London’s Gatwick Airport are suspended after drones were seen flying over the runway, the BBC reports. The two drones were spotted hovering near the runway late on Wednesday night, causing flight cancellations and diversions. According to the BBC, some airlines rerouted their aircraft to Amsterdam and Paris, as well as other domestic UK airports, namely Cardiff, Luton, and Manchester. Gatwick reopened the runway at 3:01 this morning, but was forced to close it again a mere 45 minutes later, after a further sighting of drones. At the time of writing, flights to and from the airport are still…

Why I’d spend $1,000 on hi-fi earbuds before speakers or headphones

Dec20

When I reviewtop-of-the-line (read: expensive) hardware, I often find myself having to make a disclaimer: you don’t need to spend this much, because there’s something 95 percent as good for a far lower price. But inevitably, people some people will relentlessly chase that last 5 percent. Nowhere is this truer than in audio. It’s a market that dangerously straddles the line between science and subjectivity, and that struggle for the last ounce of performance can be the difference between three and four-digit price tags. Granted, most people get that high-end audio is a luxury market, but I still find many…
