Chinese hardware giant Xiaomi just announced that it is officially turning its Redmi label – which it’s used for its budget Android phones – into a sub-brand. The announcement on the company’s website indicates that it’ll reveal more information at a press conference on January 10. The Redmi name has been synonymous with great battery life and serious bang for your buck, in terms of hardware. Case in point: last year’s Redmi Note 5 Pro, and the more recent Redmi 6 Pro. The series has helped Xiaomi soar to the top spot on the country’s phone brand leaderboard. The image…

Hackers take over Chromecasts to warn owners about security risks

A couple of dutiful hackers have been hijacking thousands of Google’s Chromecast streaming dongles to warn users that the devices can be taken over, and remotely forced to play any YouTube video the attackers’ choose, reports TechCrunch. The CastHack bug exploits a weakness in the Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) networking standard in some routers, which makes some connected devices – like Chromecasts – accessible on the internet. The two hackers, who go by the monikers Hacker Giraffe and J3ws3r, took the opportunity to display a message warning users about the security flaw. They also encouraged people to subscribe to…

New USB-C protocol could save your devices from faulty chargers

To protect devices from damage through incompatible chargers and malware attacks, USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF) – the organization that supports and promotes changes for USB standards – has introduced an authentication program for USB-C connections.  The program invites device makers to implement an optional cryptography-based protocol to authenticate USB-C connections. The protocol can help the host device (like your phone or laptop) authenticate and certify a USB device, USB cable, or USB charger, at the moment the connection is made. It can also recognize certificates and capabilities of the connected device (such as an external hard drive). The protocol relies on 128-bit security…

They were hand-picked from our writers located all over the world, and while most are from 2018, some are from years earlier, which we had missed. Here were the nine podcast episodes you definitely should have listened to…
