We need an ‘AI sidekick’ to fight malicious AI

“Now that we realize our brains can be hacked, we need an antivirus for the brain.” Those were the words of Yuval Noah Harari, famous historian and outspoken critic of Silicon Valley. The sentence, which was part of a recent interview by Wired’s Nick Thompson with Harari and former Google design ethicist Tristan Harris, was a reference to how tech companies use AI algorithms to manipulate user behavior in profitable ways. For instance, if you’re watching NBA game recap videos, YouTube will recommend more NBA videos. The more videos you watch, the more ads YouTube can show you, and the more money it…

Amelia Earhart would have a hard time disappearing in 2019

When Amelia Earhart took off in 1937 to fly around the world, people had been flying airplanes for only about 35 years. When she tried to fly across the Pacific, she – and the world – knew it was risky. She didn’t make it, and was declared dead in January 1939. Reliance Jio, the third largest mobile carrier in India, is blocking access to several proxy and VPN sites that allow users to anonymously browse the web and sidestep internet service providers’ content restrictions online. Quartz reported the incident today, following reports from several Redditors in a thread from last week. That’s worrying, because it indicates that Jio – which claims to have 250 million subscribers (PDF) and offers some of the cheapest data plans in the world – is in violation of net neutrality principles that state that ISPs should treat all online traffic equally. The government approved these principles…

AI and 5G are currently the biggest buzzwords in the smartphone world, and now they’re making their way into the laptop space. Chipmaker Intel announced a program named “Project Athena” to encourage hardware makers to build laptops with AI and 5G capabilities, starting later this year. The company describes the project as being “designed to enable new experiences and capitalize on next-generation technologies, including 5G and artificial intelligence.” The project will outline specifications each year for introducing new features to consumers. The company will also work with partners to co-engineer components for upcoming laptops under the project, and certify Athena…
