The FBI says its photo analysis is scientific evidence. Scientists disagree.

At the FBI Laboratory in Quantico, Virginia, a team of about a half-dozen technicians analyzes pictures down to their pixels, trying to determine if the faces, hands, clothes or cars of suspects match images collected by investigators from cameras at crime scenes. The unit specializes in visual evidence and facial identification, and its examiners can aid investigations by making images sharper, revealing key details in a crime or ruling out potential suspects. But the work of image examiners has never had a strong scientific foundation, and the FBI’s endorsement of the unit’s findings as trial evidence troubles many experts and…

The quiet threat inside ‘internet of things’ devices

Jan21

As Americans increasingly buy and install smart devices in their homes, all those cheap interconnected devices create new security problems for individuals and society as a whole. The problem is compounded by businesses radically expanding the number of sensors and remote monitors it uses to manage overhead lights in corporate offices and detailed manufacturing processes in factories. Governments, too, are getting into the act – cities, especially, want to use new technologies to improve energy efficiency, reduce traffic congestion and improve water quality. The number of these “internet of things” devices is climbing into the tens of billions. They’re creating…

The UK government’s settled status app for EU nationals is an embarrassment

Posted In: Around the Web, UK

Brexit is imminent. While the debate around the terms of the UK’s departure from the European Union is framed as a battle between “leavers” and “remainers,” it’s often easy to forget that there are over three million EU citizens caught in the middle. Some of these people have lived in the UK for over 40 years. They’ve bought homes here. They’ve raised kids here. And now, freedom of movement, the very mechanism that allowed them to make Britain their home, is being removed. The British government has pledged that those currently living in the UK can apply for something called…

Poor cloud strategy can lead to unintended silos

Jan21

The more things change, the more they stay the same. In the last few years, IT has undergone a massive shift as hybrid cloud and multi-cloud have become entrenched in most organizations. By housing application workloads across a mix of public and private cloud platforms, with containerized orchestration among the environments, companies can maximize cost efficiency, scalability, performance, and other benefits. However, the growing number of disparate clouds is raising a concern that has dogged IT forever: silos. In the traditional on-premise world, silos proliferated when enterprise data and applications were spread among fragmented servers and data centers that were…
