Politicians have failed us, it’s time for AI to stop school shootings

Every passing minute brings us closer to the next school shooting. There were 24 resulting in injury or death last year — an average of two per month. Politicians didn’t address the problem in 2018, and they won’t this year either. The never-ending political debate between the right and the left has overshadowed arguably the best and most immediate solution: artificial intelligence. Lisa Falzone, CEO and co-founder of Athena Security, has had enough. She, and others in the security space believe AI is the solution we’re not talking about. Falzone told TNW she started her company because, after several successful…

The Roomba i7+ is an $1,100 robot vacuum that’s worth every penny

Feb01

Posted In: Around the Web, Plugged

Two months in and I’m ready to call it. The race is over. For the money, there is no better robotic vacuum on the market than iRobot’s Roomba i7+. “For the money,” though, is a huge caveat; this is a device that sells for north of a thousand bucks. If the past two years has proven anything, it’s that the market is shifting toward smaller, quieter, and cheaper robots. For iRobot, this is a nose-thumbing moment to the cheaper, albeit capable, Chinese competitors. It’s a direct contradiction that takes the bigger, faster, stronger approach to a world that craves commoditized…

A deadly tree disease is devastating the citrus industry – AI can help

Feb01
by Sindy Cator on February 1, 2019 at 5:29 pm
Posted In: Around the Web, artificial intelligence

It’s estimated that 100 percent of citrus trees over three-years-old in the state of Florida have an incurable, deadly disease. They will wither and die within the next few years. California’s orchards are next. Thankfully, we have a new ally in the fight to save the citrus industry: artificial intelligence. While scientists race to create disease-resistant trees, politicians and activists argue over where we should draw the line with pesticide use. The net result of these efforts may yield optimism for the future, but it shows little hope for farmers today. AI, on the other hand, helps growers protect their crops…

National Geographic and more map the future of marketing at TNW2019

When done right, a marketing campaign can be one of the most powerful ways for brands to attract and engage audiences. But how can you stand out from the crowd? From seamless CGI in movie promo to using the #MeToo movement to rebrand yourself, we’re seeing technology and new strategies pave the way for meaningful marketing and storytelling. It’s exciting to think about the possibilities of new mediums and tech to tell authentic stories in the future. At TNW2019, our technology conference in Amsterdam, the Re:Brand track will explore just that. We already have some cool speakers lined up, from…

Surviving a cash flow crisis: An entrepreneur’s guide to keeping your startup financed

Feb01
by Sindy Cator on February 1, 2019 at 4:32 pm

It’s not news – cash flow problems kill off startups right and left. They almost killed off ours. Back in 2014, just before co-founding Publicize with my partner Eddie Arrieta, I completed an application for a pre-Stripe era payment processor, estimating that we’d need to process up to $1000/day. One TechCrunch feature later and our small team was welcoming more and more new clients, relishing the taste of success and congrats from friends, and looking to more than double in size. There was just one problem. A call from said payment processor informed us that we’d surpassed our $1000/day limit.…
