Asus’ $190 ZenFone Max M2 Pro offers tremendous battery life – but little else

In India’s fast-growing mobile device market, phones priced between Rs 10,000-15,000 ($150-230) sell like hot cakes. In the past couple of years, Xiaomi has been a top choice for customers in the country buying a new device in that range. But it now faces stiff competition from rival brands attempting to match them in value. Case in point: Asus’ ZenFone Max Pro M2, which launched last December. The company’s betting on a big battery and clean stock Android software to win over customers looking for a mid-range handset. And Asus almost got it right with the Pro M2. Before we…

How to improve “the best technology festival on the planet”

Feb13

Here’s a challenge: you’ve won awards for the best conference in Europe, CNBC named you “the best technology festival on the planet”, and now you have to organize another edition that’s even better. Good luck. Let’s start with some background. Our very first event was in a church in Amsterdam back in 2006. It was a successful event, it drew in an international crowd of 280 delegates, had a catchy name (The Next Web) and everybody was excited (or at least that’s how I remember it). Thirteen years later, we’re one of the most experienced parties in the industry as we…

Here are the 5 hottest startups in Norway

A country of never-ending sunsets, northern lights, and home to over 50 thousand islands and fjords, Norway has always been a haven for nature enthusiasts. But now it’s also becoming a haven for techies. Norway is home to one of the fastest growing startup ecosystems in the Nordics. In the first half of 2018, the country raised $185.8 million in investments, a full 76.3 percent increase compared to H1 2017. If you compare that to a 2.2 percent increase across the entire Nordic region, it’s clear that Norway’s tech scene is growing at an explosive rate. Norway’s up and coming…

Human-centered design should consider all humans

I remember listening carefully to the presentation on the redesign, trying hard to bite my tongue and keep my comments until the end. I was still shy, I still felt new, and I was battling a serious case of imposter syndrome. It was probably a dumb question, anyway. I shouldn’t ask it. Easier said than done. I felt the question permeating through every fiber of my being, reverberating in my mind until it was the only thought I had. “Did you get anyone else’s insight on this project? Was it just you all? Have you considered how that might be limiting…

TikTok is under fire in India over alleged cyberbullying

Feb13

Most of us know TikTok – the app that allows users to create 15-second videos – as a place for silly (and sometimes cringy) videos created by teenagers. But, there’s another side to it filled with sexually explicit content and cyberbullying. Now, and the Indian state of Tamilnadu wants to ban the app while alleging that it causes “cultural degradation.” On Tuesday, the south Indian state’s IT minister, M Manikandan, said the state is planning to block TikTok and urge the country’s government to ban it as well. The minister was responding to a query from Thamimun Ansari, a state legislator,…
