You’re thinking about foldable phones all wrong

The recently unveiled foldable phones are astonishing, both in terms of the technical aspects, but also their eyewatering price tags. The Samsung Galaxy Fold, announced mere days before MWC, will retail for €2,000. At €2,300, the Huawei Mate X is even more expensive. Make no mistake, these are expensive phones. Assuming they eventually become available on contract (which is a big if, because they’re a.) niche and b.) unfathomably expensive), punters can easily expect to pay northwards of €100 per month. But the thing is, the first generation of foldable phones aren’t mass-market handsets. If you regard them as developer…

TNW’s unofficial MWC survival guide

Sweaty. Hot. Crowded. Uncomfortable. I could be talking about a Thai prison, but I’m not. This is Mobile World Congress, arguably the biggest event in the smartphone calendar. Over three days, over 100,000 people will flock to the balmy and beautiful city of Barcelona to discuss all things tech. This is my first time covering the event. I usually make a point to avoid trade shows, simply because they’re always a bit miserable. This year was different though, and the temptation to see the first generation of foldable smartphones made me bite the bullet. Before I set out, I wanted…

‘The Gyllenhaal Experiment’ shows where redditors go wrong in spelling celebrity names

Feb25
by Sindy Cator on February 25, 2019 at 8:13 pm

In more than 600,000 attempts at spelling actress Scarlett Johansson’s name, fewer than one-in-three were successful. In terms of absolute certainty, all we can be sure of is that most would get the first five letters correct. Called “The Gyllenhaal Experiment,” after both Jake and Maggie Gyllenhaal — both actors with hard-to-spell names — the study sheds light on some of the most common spelling errors on Reddit. The data gets pulled any time a redditor uses “(sp?)” — a common method used to indicate that the poster is unsure of spelling — after an attempt to spell a word, or…

Energizer’s ridiculous 18,000 mAh smartphone is an absolute unit

Feb25
by Sindy Cator on February 25, 2019 at 7:24 pm
Posted In: Around the Web, Plugged

The stalls at this year’s Mobile World Congress have no shortage of bizarre phones – from devices that fold over, to somewhat sketchy handsets that mine cryptocurrencies. The Energizer Power Max P18K Pop, however, takes the biscuit. It then eats that biscuit, and then a whole load more, because it’s unspeakably thick. It’s thicker than the Gideon Bible currently resting in my hotel’s bedside table. It’s heftier than a sumo wrestler in a hall of mirrors. It’s got more chunk than Chunk from The Goonies. It’s massive. I mean, just look at this monster. What you see is a non-functional…
