Good news for security nerds (and the rest of us, really): WebAuthn (short for Web Authentication), a standard for authenticating your identity on the internet, has now been ushered in as an official standard by the World Wide Web Consortium and the FIDO Alliance. That means you’ll soon be able to use hardware devices, like USB security keys and biometric scanners, to securely log into web apps and services. USB4 promises faster speeds and less confusing names for your cables

Yesterday, USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF) – a group that oversees USB standards – announced the USB4 protocol, which is capable of handling data transfer speeds up to 40Gbps – that’s four times more than USB 3.1’s transfer capacity. That’s great if you’ve compatible storage devices, or displays connected to your system. Plus, the USB4 protocol will also support charging at 100 watts of power, and running two 4K displays at 60Hz (or one 5K display).
