Tech companies need to do more to fight child abuse content

YouTube has, yet again, failed to protect children online. Recent investigations by Wired and video blogger Matt Watson have alleged that paedophiles were using the site’s comments section to leave predatory messages on videos containing and uploaded by children, and to share links to child sexual abuse material. In response to the investigations – and the threat of an advertiser boycott – YouTube has now said it will disable comments on videos containing young children. But sadly, this is not an isolated incident. In January 2019 it was alleged that Microsoft’s Bing search engine was surfacing and suggesting child sexual abuse…

There’s only 57 days left until our tech conference! A few days ago, my daily newsletter explained how you can get your boss to buy your TNW2019 ticket. I’m not satisfied, however, because you don’t deserve to go alone. Everything is so much more fun when you have people to share it with, so in today’s TNW2019 Daily, I’ll show you how to get your boss to buy tickets for your entire team. Manipulation is an art form, so please pay close attention to the master (that would be me – I once convinced my boss to hire me, so…

A close reading of Facebook’s wild nudity and sex guidelines

Mar13

I’m now aware of something I wasn’t before: Facebook‘s guidelines on adult nudity and sexual activity. And let me tell you something – they’re wild. Basically, these are the policies the social media giant uses to define whether something is too sexual to be allowed on the platform. We were alerted to them by Twitter user GordyPls and you can read the whole thing here, which I suggest you do. Now, as is only right, we need to take a deep dive into this document. We need to understand it, to analyze it, to become it. So, first things first, let’s look at its…

Data: China has the most blockchain patents, despite banning cryptocurrency

Mar13

Posted In: Around the Web, blockchain, cryptocurrency, Hard Fork
