Years after brutal $2M hack, Gatecoin cryptocurrency exchange is dead

Seminal cryptocurrency exchange Gatecoin is dead. It’s finally going into liquidation, years after it lost $2 million in cryptocurrency belonging to its customers. Gatecoin was one of the first regulated digital asset exchange services to spring up. Hailing from Hong Kong and launched way back in 2013, it was focused entirely on Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Ethereum-based token markets. According to the post, signed by “The Gatecoin Team,” payment service troubles supposedly “paralyzed” Gatecoin’s operation for months, and caused the company “substantial loss” from which it could not recover. “On 13 March 2019, the court has granted a winding-up order against our company,”…

The world’s fifth largest oil and gas producer in the world, Royal Dutch Shell, is getting further into the blockchain game, and is looking to train the next generation of blockchain industry execs. Shell is looking for “blockchain analysts” as part of its Information Technology (IT) graduate programme, according to a job listing on its graduate careers website. The job role has seemingly flown under the radar for the last four months after being posted to LinkedIn. According to the job specification, the placement will take place in Shell‘s Blockchain Centre of Excellence (CoE). But what does a “blockchain analyst”…

Android Q makes sharing your WiFi password with friends super easy

Google rolled out Android Q‘s first beta version for all Pixel phones last night. I’ve installed it on my Pixel 3 XL, and found some really neat features. One of the best new additions is how easy it is to share your WiFi settings. Every time a friend visits your home, you have to tell them your WiFi password. Not anymore. Android Q gives you a handy option to share your WiFi connection details through a QR code. Your friend can then quickly scan the code, and boom – they’re connected to your router. To do that, head to Settings…

Hackers who stole $150,000 from buggy Bitcoin ATMs still at large

Mar14

Yesterday, Toronto police issued a statement requesting public help to locate four men suspected of carrying out a string of Bitcoin scams across Canada. Late last year, the Calgary police service received information relating to numerous fraudulent transactions made at Bitcoin ATMs that specifically target one Canadian Bitcoin company. It’s unclear why the criminals targeted the company in question. “It is alleged that between Sunday, September 16, 2018, and Wednesday, September 26, 2018, 112 fraudulent transactions had been made at Bitcoin kiosks in seven cities across Canada,” the statement reads. About $150,000 (CA$195,000) was stolen during the 10-day period. The…
