Stadia’s Google Assistant integration is the gaming feature I never knew I needed

Google today revealed just what kind of hat it intends to throw in the gaming ring — a cloud streaming service called Stadia. Most of the news was a lot of blue sky development jargon, but it did reveal one thing about Stadia that’ll probably do more to help gamers than any new controller or lack of latency: a dedicated walkthrough button. Most of the reveal was focused on what Stadia could offer game developers — which is natural, as it took place at a game developer’s conference. Supposedly it’ll offer the ability to stream games from anything that runs a…

Google announces Stadia, its cross-platform game streaming service

At the 2019 Game Developers Conference (FDC) in San Francisco today, Google unveiled Stadia, its all-you-can-play game streaming service. It’s launching sometime this year, first in the US, Canada, UK, and most of Europe. The service will let you play all manner of computer games streamed from Google‘s data centers to your devices running the Chrome browser or ChromeOS platform, or even your TV with a Chromecast Ultra plugged in. You won’t need any additional hardware to run Stadia, and you won’t need to install anything to play games. As Google VP Phil Harrison noted in an interview with Eurogamer,…

Review: The Huawei Matebook X Pro (2019) is the best laptop I’ve ever used… ever

Comparing gadgets to their Apple equivalent is the oldest (and arguably laziest) trope in the tech journalism handbook. Android phones are inevitably compared to iPhones. Windows laptops are contrasted against MacBooks. In this piece, I’m going to try and refrain from doing that, because it’d be unfair on the Huawei Matebook X Pro. Simply put, it’s in a league of its own. In that sense, the Huawei Matebook X Pro is a bit of a black swan. I had a hunch it would be good, but I didn’t think it would be this good. I’ve been using it as my…

We finally get a glimpse of System Shock 3 — and it was worth the wait

The Game Developers Conference began yesterday, and it got off to an unexpectedly good start by finally revealing footage of a game long-rumored to be in development, System Shock 3. Previously glimpsed only in bits, it’s good to finally see the return of one of the old masters of gaming in full glory. The teaser trailer is fairly brief, showing the series’ trademark desolate space location and a glimpse of creepy antagonist SHODAN, in glossy new graphics. Given that it was shown during the Unity conference, it’s a given it’ll be made in that engine. Director Warren Spector described it as…
