Netflix‘s chief content officer revealed this week that the Witcher show, an adaptation of the Polish fantasy epic-cum-video game dynasty, is going to arrive on the streaming service later this year — just in time to fill the void left by a certain other fantasy show’s conclusion. CCO Ted Sarandos confirmed the intended fourth quarter release during an earnings call, according to Variety. His tone when he describes The Witcher is almost charmingly jejune — he says it’s “a big new original series that we’re currently shooting in Hungary called The Witcher, that is an enormous European IP, very popular game and Book IP, that…

Samsung has another PR disaster on its hands. According to multiple sources, Samsung’s new Galaxy Fold — its dual-screen, folding smartphone — is failing just days after reviewers got their hands on it. At least it’s not catching fire. “A review unit given to CNBC by Samsung is completely unusable after just two days of use,” wrote Todd Haselton. After one day of use… pic.twitter.com/VjDlJI45C9 — Steve Kovach (@stevekovach) April 17, 2019 So far, the $1,980 device has only been sent to a select few gadget reviewers, the bulk of which seem to be experiencing similar problems that render the…

Ubisoft today announced it’d be giving away Assassin’s Creed Unity away for free, as a tribute to the damaged Notre-Dame and to give gamers “the chance to experience the majesty and beauty of the cathedral” in the wake of the fire. Unity, which is set during the French Revolution and stars a rebellious aristocrat-turned-Assassin named Arno, features a painstaking replica of Notre-Dame — a recreation so thorough that it could be a valuable resource to the French government when reconstruction gets underway. The artist in charge of the design spent two years working on just the cathedral, in order to ensure…

An international team of scientists recently unveiled a new CRISPR-based tool capable of shredding long portions of targeted DNA strands. The new technique provides advantages over previous methods and could potentially lead to a cure for viral diseases such as herpes and hepatitis-C. The new tool is called Type I CRISPR-Cas3. It’s a long-range DNA targeting and editing tool – it can delete longer sections of DNA than its predecessor, the Type II CRISPR–Cas9. The “Type I” and “Type II” distinctions indicate which kind of CRISPR bacteria DNA the tools are based on. The Cas3 version is the only CRISPR…
