Study: Women founders face challenges, but investor bias isn’t one

It’s recently been confirmed that female-led startup companies get just 10 percent of venture capital investment. And according to the report, it’s not just female leadership that puts investors off, it’s the mere presence of a woman — the report states that having a woman on the pitch team means you will get just a tenth of funding compared to those without. The reality, of course, is far more complex. The report makes clear that the proportion of female-led startups that received investment (4 percent) was roughly the same as those who asked for it (5 percent), so we need…

I failed supporting my female co-founder — here’s how I try to do better

Apr13

I always thought of myself as an enlightened, progressive man. Maybe I didn’t exactly paste the word “feminist” on my forehead, but fundamentally I consider the designation correct. When it came to equality, I always thought: sure thing, of course. It’s 2019, people. What are we still talking about? Why aren’t we making it simple? Then Fränzi Kühne, my colleague and co-founder at TLGG, became pregnant. When she conveyed this news to us, we didn’t exactly share her joy. Someone even blurted out, “Do you want to ruin us?” A reaction chock full of gender clichés and pigeonholing, typical of…

CHEAP: 29% off Harman/Kardon’s Onyx Studio 4 speaker, just for you

Apr13
by Sindy Cator on April 13, 2019 at 12:00 pm
Posted In: Around the Web, Plugged

Welcome to CHEAP, our series about things that are good, but most of all, cheap. CHEAP! If not just straight-up ugly, a lot of Bluetooth speakers are, well, instantly forgettable. But you know one that isn’t? Yep, that’s right: the Harman/Kardon Onyx Studio 4. Even better, you can currently get this speaker for only $149.99, that’s $60 (or 29 percent) off its list price. Woo! Rather than appearing like the normal cylinder speaker, Harman/Kardon did something different with the Onyx Studio 4. It’s kinda like a fabric covered satellite dish, but, you know, in a fashionable way. Take a peep: The Onyx Studio…

Smart cities are an AI-powered dystopia that’s already happening

Apr13
by Sindy Cator on April 13, 2019 at 9:31 am
Posted In: Around the Web, artificial intelligence, syndication

Separating the futuristic from the dystopian in the minds of the general public can be a challenge, particularly when trying to conceptualize a diverse technology such as AI recognition. In today’s markets, a tangible example can be seen in consumer products such as the iPhone XS, with its Face ID facial-recognition unlocking. By and large, this has been warmly received, with the majority of complaints relating to UX and design, thanks to the removal of a fingerprint scanner, and the screen notch to accommodate the Face ID sensors. But what of more sinister applications? The gradual progression of fingerprint identification…
