F-Secure report highlights the woeful state of insecurity in the energy industry

It is the most important industry in the world. Energy. We need it. Without it, nothing works. Without the oil producers and refiners, there’s no petrol to fuel our cars. Without power plans and the supporting infrastructure, there’s no electricity to keep the lights on. Without natural gas pipelines, there’s nothing to heat our homes with. Put simply, energy is foundational to our entire economy. It’s for that reason, and that reason alone, why it presents such a tempting target for hackers. And troublingly, according to a damning report from F-Secure, The State of the Station, companies working in the…

So it begins: after months of rumors and speculation, the first details of the next-generation PlayStation console have finally come to light. In addition to the predictable nuts-and-bolts updates, we have new information on the most desirable upgrades, namely that the new console will be fully backwards compatible. It’ll also come with a massive new drive that could, in theory, cut loading times down to nothing. The details come courtesy of Wired‘s interview with Mark Cerny, game designer and lead architect of the PS4 and Vita. Cerny wouldn’t name the new baby, which has been in development for about four years,…

Is this the real life? Is this just fantasy? Are angels really AIs sent to monitor us on behalf of the programmers responsible for our creation? MIT computer scientist Rizwan Virk tackles these mind-boggling questions and many more in his new book ‘Simulation Hypothesis.’ This adventurous non-fiction work speculates the origins of reality, claiming it’s most likely we’re in a computer simulation. In doing so, Virk draws on his vast knowledge of quantum physics, computer science, philosophy, Eastern religion, video games, and science fiction. The result is a compelling – though sometimes frantic – argument against the idea we’re living…

Microsoft’s Surface team is reportedly making an AirPods competitor

It was just last October that Microsoft released the Surface Headphones, its first real foray into headphones. It turns out the company might not be stopping there. Microsoft is reportedly planning on building its own “true wireless” headphones in the vein of Apple’s AirPods. The report comes courtesy of Brad Sams of Thurrott, which has a reliable track record on Microsoft rumors. Sams writes the earbuds are codenamed ‘Morrison’ – likely after Jim Morrison of the Doors – citing “multiple sources who are familiar with the company’s plans.” At launch, they might be called Surface Buds, but there’s no confirmation of…
