Australia is clamping down on the taxation of cryptocurrencies. The country’s tax office is collecting bulk records from Australian cryptocurrency service providers as part of a data matching scheme to make sure traders are paying the correct amount of tax. Data matching is an administrative and law enforcement tool whereby information from a variety of third-party sources is compiled electronically, validated, and analyzed to enable people to do things such as pre-filing their tax returns. In its statement, the Australian Tax Office (ATO) says it is estimated that 500,000 to 1,000,000 Australians have invested in crypto-assets. “The ATO uses third party…

With local and European elections just mere days away, the UK government is heavily promoting its S.H.A.R.E Checklist campaign across social media, which warns against the dangers of proliferating fake news. Just because a story is online, doesn’t mean it’s true. The internet is great, but it can be used to spread misleading news and content.Make sure you know what you’re sharing. Don’t feed the beast. Earlier this month, hackers accessed the emails of numerous Microsoft Outlook users after snatching the credentials of one of the company’s customer support reps. But now it turns out the hackers were also able to steal users’ cryptocurrency. One affected user says the hackers lifted 1 Bitcoin (over $5,000 at the time of writing) from his wallet, Motherboard reports. Hackers stole 1 Bitcoin (over $5,000 at the time of writing) from one user, Motherboard reports. Other Microsoft email account users affected by the breach are also starting to come forward. Amazon wants to deliver crime news and fear to Ring doorbell owners

Amazon is in the process of a curious hire – a Managing Editor, News – to help bring “breaking crime news alerts” to owners of Ring’s home security gadgets. It’s odd because it’s arguably the first time a security firm has required someone to fill this position within its ranks. But as Nieman Lab director Joshua Benton infers, there’s probably something more insidious at play.   While the Amazon-owned company hasn’t explained exactly how this layer of news will fit into its services, it’s likely that Ring will surface local crime alerts in its Neighbors mobile app, which is already available…
