Cryptocurrency and blockchain were built to usurp centralized authorities like governments and banks. And then came Ripple, the digital asset that throws the cypherpunk ideology straight out the window. Ripple has managed to make cryptocurrencies and corporate institutions unlikely bedfellows. It has often drawn criticism for ‘not being a real cryptocurrency’ and not being truly decentralized. Police have busted two prolific dark web drug markets in a global sting, seizing six-figure amounts of Bitcoin and Monero cryptocurrency, as well as loads of narcotics. “[The Wall Street Market] was the world’s second largest dark web market, enabling the trade in drugs (including cocaine, heroin, cannabis and amphetamines), stolen data, fake documents and malicious software,” said Europol. “The illegal platform was exclusively accessible via the Tor network in the so-called Darknet and aimed at international trade in criminal goods.” Over €550,000 ($613,600) in cash, six-figure sums of cryptocurrency, vehicles, as well as computers and related data storage devices…

A resident of the self-governing British island, Jersey, has lost their life-savings to a Bitcoin scam. Scammers hoodwinked the victim over an 18-month period leading him on to eventually hand over his £1.2 million ($1.5 million) life savings, The Jersey Evening Post reports. The criminals promised the victim returns 15 times the size of their investment. According to reports, the victim was contacted by the criminal‘s company after asking about Bitcoin online. He was led to believe that the company was offering legitimate Bitcoin investments. Over the following 18 months, the criminals duped the victim into making larger investments that…
