Emma Harman, Managing Director EMEA for Whaler, a company that connects businesses to creators; and John Hegarty, founder of Bartle Bogle Hegarty (BBH), a creative agency, talked about how technology aids brands and creators at TNW2019 conference today. Hegarty said that 90 percent of content around us was crap, but noted technology was really helping creators and influencers who are trying to make a difference. He added that great brands try and create a movement that changes the world, and companies like Whaler and influencers are shaping up that message nicely.  Harman opined that brands in today’s age need to…

Slack‘s VP of customer experience, Ali Rayl, took to the stage earlier today at TNW2019 to explore how technology is reshaping the way we work, and how we should deal with it. Rayl takes a rather dystopian look at the business market: “companies will die,” she said. With technology, age-old industries like that of taxis are being disrupted. Uber now replaces black cabs, Airbnb disrupted travel. For a business to have any chance of succeeding in a modern world where “technology disrupts,” it needs to find its hedgehog. Rayl didn’t mean the small bush dwelling creature, but rather, businesses need…

We’re coming to you live from day one of TNW 2019, our flagship conference in Amsterdam. Up next is Marsha Krouwel, Hearst Magazines’ publishing group director and Lead Scout and Advisory Board Member. Krouwels’ talk at TNW2019 discusses how both founders and investors can close the gap in funding for female-led startups. According to Pitchbook, only 1.6 percent of investment money went to female-founded startups from 2010  to 2018. Just 6.8 percent of invested money went to diverse teams — meaning over 90 percent of every euro invested went to only male-led startups. Even though male founders have been given a headstart in the world…

National Geographic’s Executive VP: Brand authenticity is key for long-term survival

At TNW2019, National Geographic’s Executive Vice President Emanuele Madeddu spoke about the importance of brands being purpose-focused in a bid to survive in today’s challenging business and media environment. Brands are constantly competing for consumers’ time and it’s not surprising that they trial new and innovate ways to retain and attract audiences. This said, Madeddu believes a company‘s purpose, which is crucial for its long-term survival, shouldn’t suffer as a result. Madeddu explained that in National Geographic’s case, being purpose-focused entails igniting the spirit of exploration in its audience and giving people the necessary tools to understand what is happening…
