Google Science Fair 2014 kicks off to find bright young scientists with ideas to change the world

Screen Shot 2014 02 12 at 15.06.12 520x245 Google Science Fair 2014 kicks off to find bright young scientists with ideas to change the world

Google has kicked off Google Science Fair 2014, its annual online competition for bright, creative and ambitious teenagers who want to change the world with science.

While the project is led by Google, it also has the backing of Virgin Galactic – Richard Branson’s commercial space – the Lego Group and world-renowned publications National Geographic and Scientific American. The competition is open for students aged 13 to 18, who can sign-up now, form a team (if they wish) and begin working on a submission.

The top entrant will be rewarded with a ten-day expedition to the Galapagos Islands aboard the National Geographic Endeavor, as well as a VIP tour of Virgin Galactic’s ‘Spaceport America‘ in New Mexico. Google is also throwing in a $50,000 scholarship and a $10,000 grant for the winner’s school to purchase cutting-edge science lab equipment.

There will also be age category prizes, rewards for the 15 global finalists and some standalone accolades, such as the Scientific American Science in Action Award, Voter’s Choice Award, Local Award and the Google Science Fair Computer Science Award.

Google suggests that each project should be “an in-depth investigation of a science question or engineering problem” but otherwise, it’s up to students to pick and develop an idea that follows the competition rules.

Completed projects need to be submitted by May 12, 2014 at 11:59 PDT, and the judges this year include; Professor Steve Cowley, chief executive of the UK Atomic Energy Authority; Beth Moses, an aerospace engineer for Virgin Galactic; Mariette DiChristina, editor in chief for Scientific American.

Google will announce the regional contestants in June, ahead of global finalists in August and the competition winners in September.

Interested? Here are the rules.

LG teases the G2 MINI, a smaller version of its flagship Android smartphone ahead of MWC

LG will be attending Mobile World Congress later this month and already we have a pretty good idea of what it’ll be launching there: a smaller version of the LG G2, called the not so surprising G2 MINI.

The firm put a teaser image for the device up on its Facebook page earlier today, with the caption “experience the MINI” and some details for the announcement – February 24, at the annual mobile industry trade show in Barcelona.

The monochrome photo features some cupcakes, starfish and Converse-style trainers – take from that what you will – with a dash of pink alongside the device itself. It looks awfully similar to the original LG G2, with a minimal amount of bezel and the unique volume rocker underneath the rear-facing camera.

We’ll be there at Mobile World Congress to give you all the details as soon as they’re announced.

PlayStation Preview: Hands-on with Infamous: Second Son

At a PlayStation gaming showcase event earlier this week, we went hands-on with Sucker Punch’s upcoming Infamous: Second Son game.

When the PlayStation 4 launched last year, it lacked a full stable of launch titles to show off its remarkable potential. Infamous: Second Son launches in North America on March 21, managing to barely squeeze into the console’s extended launch window, which runs through the end of March.

While Second Son draws on the same universe of the first two Infamous games, it’s designed so that you can follow the story even if you’re new to the franchise. Studio co-founder Brian Fleming, who is serving as a producer on the game, described Second Son as a relaunch for Infamous.

The premise of the game is that a subset of Earth’s population, called Conduits, can utilize superpowers by pulling in energy from the environment around them. Sucker Punch’s demo and hands-on centered around two separate missions after protagonist Delsin Rowe acquires a new superpower allowing him to manipulate neon light. Depending on whether you chose the path of good or evil, the mission will take place with different locations, objectives and play styles.

With a little more than a month left before it ships, the version of the game we played was mostly complete, but the in-game interface had yet to be finalized and Delsin’s superpower energy was set to unlimited.

Based on our hands-on time, the game looks fabulous. The environment offers a gritty re-creation of Seattle with plenty of opportunities to explore and interact.

The Neon power is more projectile based, while Smoke is designed for more close combat. Sucker Punch admitted it has been tightlipped about how many other powers Delsin will acquire over the course of the game, but the developer did say that we have plenty to look forward to.

While the Infamous series is known for the role that moral decisions play in affect the outcome of the game, Sucker Punch has tightly integrated those decisions into the combat aspect of Second Son. For instance, you’ll have a choice whether to kill hostiles by shooting them in the head or simply incapacitating them by shooting them in the kneecap. When enemies surrender, you’ll get to choose whether to execute or subdue them.

Sucker Punch has shown off how awesome it is to blast away with superpowers in Second Son, but I’ve been curious how the game balance will work. Since the hands-on demo was set to easy, I asked Second Son Director Nate Fox about what the studio did to make the game challenging.

“Everyone thinks the most fun thing in the world would be to fly and disintegrate people with a glance, but God Mode is only fun for 30 seconds,” he said. “Delsin’s powers come from the environment. He harvests them from the city itself, but he runs out. It puts you in jams. You’ll need to go reload.”

Sucker Punch relied on the city as inspiration for creating truly new superpowers.

“We wanted to make sure when we picked the powers for Delsin that there were two things: that they were something that you saw in the city around you…and we wanted to make something that people hadn’t seen before,” Fox added.

While you see plenty of comic book, movie and game heroes with fire-related powers, smoke isn’t as common. That gave the team an opportunity to implement new gameplay experiences for gamers like jumping through air vents and shooting out through a smokestack.

Since Delsin can absorb the powers of other Conduits, Second Son’s designers had a blank slate to come up with new powers for him.

“People come to the Infamous franchise to be able to play with superpowers. Letting Delsin absorb the powers of the people that he comes across just means that he gets a wider set of toys.”

The chance to discover and wield new superpowers is exactly the kind of experience that drew us to gaming in the first place. From the looks of it, Infamous Second Son is set to deliver the first truly next-gen experience for the PS4 when it arrives next month.

It’s a done deal: Google has completed its $3.2 billion acquisition of Nest

Posted In: Around the Web, Google, Insider

Google completed its acquisition of Nest on February 7, it was revealed today in a regulatory filing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission.

The $3.2 billion deal was one of Google’s most high-profile and unexpected buyouts in recent memory, obtaining the hardware company’s portfolio of home automation devices and staff, led by former iPod designer Tony Fadell.

Last month, the ex-Apple visionary described some of the meetings he had with Larry Page and other Google executives prior to the deal’s completion:

“The two-way interchange of what was, for me, intellectual happiness and the stimulation of being able to go back and forth and really create a new world together – and in a different way than either of us had imagined – that was personally exciting to me.”

Reports have suggested that Google will now use Nest to lead its core hardware group moving forward.

After NSA revelations, the EU wants Internet governance to be less concentrated in the US

The European Commission put forward fresh measures today to share the management and operations of Internet infrastructure among the international community, making it more open, accountable and secure.

Among its proposals, the Commission is asking for the responsibilities bestowed upon the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), a nonprofit based in the United States, to be distributed globally. It would include the duties of the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA), a department of ICANN which allocates IP addresses and manages root nameservers for the DNS.

The Commission also wants to bolster the Internet Governance Forum, a body for governments and industry stakeholders to discuss and debate policy, and review any outstanding conflicts in national law related to the accountability and management of current Internet infrastructure.

Neelie Kroes, Vice-President for the European Commission, said these actions were “critical” for “redrawing” how the Internet is managed and governed on a global scale. “Europe must contribute to a credible way forward for global internet governance,” she said. “Europe must play a strong role in defining what the net of the future looks like.”

The Commission says its in support of a “real multi-stakeholder governance model” that would involve multiple parties, including individuals and organizations, taking on these responsibilities.

In a press release, the commission referenced the US government’s widespread surveillance techniques, unearthed last year by NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden. While the relationship between these revelations and ICANN’s powers were not addressed, Kroes suggested that governments shouldn’t control the new model.

“I agree that governments have a crucial role to play, but top-down approaches are not the right answer,” she said. “We must strengthen the multi-stakeholder model to preserve the Internet as a fast engine for innovation.”

Specifically, she mentioned the International Telecommunications Union – a UN agency that was criticised by the European Parliament in November 2012 when it was suggested it should take on powers currently held by US bodies.
