Welcome to CHEAP, our series about things that are good, but most of all, cheap. CHEAP! The weekend is over, but its spirit is still here with this selection of deals from SanDisk. Yep, we’ve teamed up with the company to deliver you some deep savings on a whole load of SanDisk storage. What a world. It’s pretty clear why you might want some strong storage deals, but it’s worth repeating: don’t lose your data! One of the weird parts of the digital age is how easily files disappear into the ether. Hell, I’ve lost so many photos from my…

How this annoying, tiny glitch broke every Firefox extension

May06

Exactly at midnight on Friday, most users of Mozilla Firefox discovered none of their browser add-ons worked. As the company rushed to issue a hot-fix over the weekend – which is available right now for desktop and Android users (version 66.0.4) – the havoc was traced back to one, simple thing: an expired certificate. “Late on Friday May 3, we became aware of an issue with Firefox that prevented existing and new add-ons from running or being installed. We are very sorry for the inconvenience caused to people who use Firefox,” wrote Kev Needham, Product Manager for add-ons at Mozilla. Confused…

The GitHub extortion victims are outsmarting their Bitcoin scammers

May06

Blackmailers have been wiping GitHub repositories and withholding code to extort Bitcoin from their victims. Over 390 respos have been affected, but so far, the attackers haven’t made enough to even buy a coffee. The Bitcoin address the scammers list in their ransom note has received only one payment on May 3, and that was for just 0.00052525BTC ($2.95 at the time of writing). According to Bleeping Computer, the scammers are believed to have gained access to a number of code repositories – including GitHub, GitLab, and Bitbucket – by using account credentials leaked from a third-party repository management service.…

Watch: This hacked Roomba swears every time it hits an object, and it’s hilarious

Making robots swear for fun (and science) is far from a novelty on the internet. But this new video of a reprogrammed cleaning robot Roomba will still tickle your funny bone. This new gag comes from YouTuber Michael Reeves, who’s previously built a robot that shoots energy drinks when you’re tired and another one that picks tomatoes out of your salad for some reason. In his latest video, he modified a Roomba to swear every time it bumps into something. In the video (which contains pretty heavy swearing), Reeves shows how he pimped up the Roomba with a Raspberry Pi, so it…

Moonday Mornings: Bitcoin extortionists are wiping GitHub repositories – unless you pay up

Good morning. It’s Monday, so you know what that means. It’s time for Moonday Mornings, our wrap-up of the weekend’s top cryptocurrency and blockchain headlines. 1.Bitcoin extortionists have been wiping GitHub repositories and holding the data to ransom, Bleeping Computer reports. All that remains in the repositories is a ransom note demanding 0.1BTC ($560) which hackers claim will ensure the safe return of code. 2. A US district court has ordered Craig Wright to provide a list of his public Bitcoin address to prove he didn’t steal 1.1 million BTC ($6.1 mllion) from David Kleiman over their years long partnership,…
