Bing Food & Drink, Health & Fitness, Travel apps add sync, drop beta tag on Windows Phone 8

Microsoft has announced that its recently introduced Bing Food & Drink, Bing Health & Fitness and Bing Travel apps for Windows Phone 8 devices are now freely available to download having shaken off the beta tag of the earlier versions released in January.

While none of them are strictly ‘new’ – they all exist on Windows 8.1, as well as being available in beta for Windows Phone – the launch ties the platforms ever-closer together, and the company said you should find most of the key features from the Windows 8.1 app on the mobile versions. In some cases, like with Bing Food & Drink, the update actually adds additional new features not previously available on the desktop. For example, there’s now a “roaming” feature that syncs your shopping list between the two different platforms when using the Food & Drink app. Likewise, the Health & Fitness app will also sync your data between devices and platforms too, so you’re not expected to go out running with your laptop.

In addition to officially launching the new apps, Microsoft also updated some of the other existing core apps like Bing Finance, Bing Sport and Bing News. For full details, check out Microsoft’s blog post.

Google Glass-a-like ‘Icis’ smart glasses want to connect tech with fashion

Wearable tech might be the hot trend of 2014, but Boston-based Laforge thinks there’s just enough room on the market for its Icis smart glasses.

The company claims that where other devices go wrong is by focusing exclusively on the tech experience, but in doing so, completely ignore fashion. This is where Laforge hopes Icis can carve out its niche – by providing a range of different frames to suit different people, but all with the same core functionality.

Like Glass, Icis glasses play home to a camera, microphone, and a speaker. Unlike Glass, however, they feature a display directly in the line of vision that will show you all your updates as they happen. The company says that app notifications on your smartphone will be automatically converted into widgets displayed on the UI of the Icis glasses.

Essentially, it seems Laforge wants to get around platform compatibility issues by providing its own app called SocialFlo, which will then take care of showing you notifications from your usual networks and apps. All you’d need to do is download the app and connect to your phone (whichever platform it is) via Bluetooth to receive notifications.

Laforge said that Icis will also have three main activity modes: Normal, Active (cuts social notifications to a minimum while jogging, for example) and Drive, which only allows data related to driving to be displayed.

Whether or not Laforge’s system will be able to compete with the sudden influx of smart wearables remains to be seen, but the company’s CEO Corey Mack is optimistic about its chances:

We are working with eyewear and eye care professionals to make sure that this project fits within their ecosystem. We have a turnkey solution when it comes to manufacturing, and a year or so down the road you could potentially walk into an eye shop and have Icis be produced to your exact dimensions in about an hour.

That’s a pretty big ambition right there.

Laforge is only kicking off its Indiegogo project today, so there’s a way to go still to get these particular glasses through from crowdfunding idea to a delivered product, but if you want to show support there are a range of options available.

The cheapest pledge that will actually net you a pair of Icis glasses is the $420 Beta Kit (plus $50 for international shipping) option. Alternatively, if you want one of the first pairs of slightly more aesthetically appealing ones from the Icis Bold line, that’ll cost you $620. The Bold versions also include a higher resolution 1280 x 680 pixel display, instead of the 680 x 480 pixel resolution on the regular/beta kit version.

If the project reaches its target, the first Icis Bold units are expected to start shipping in January 2015, although the Beta Kit orders should be sent out from December this year, if you just can’t wait the extra month.

Microsoft Lync-Skype video calling and Lync Android app demoed, arriving ‘later this year’

Feb18

Microsoft is today demonstrating how Lync and Skype users will soon be able to make video calls between the two platforms.

Gurdeep Singh Pall, Corporate Vice President for Lync and Skype Engineering, demoed the service on stage at Microsoft’s second annual Lync conference in Las Vegas. Clearly, it will help business users and their customers to be able to seamlessly connect voice and video calls between Microsoft’s two core VoIP platforms. Voice calling between Skype and Lync has actually been available since May last year.

However, this was just a demo and the feature isn’t yet ready for the prime time. A spokesperson for Microsoft told TNW that it wouldn’t be widely available until “later this year”. In addition to showing off Lync-Skype video calling, Microsoft also took the opportunity to demo the first Lync app for Android, which is set for release “this summer”.

Documents To Go for Android gets Microsoft Office editing; Dropbox, Box, OneDrive, and Google Drive integration

Docs TO Go 520x245 Documents To Go for Android gets Microsoft Office editing; Dropbox, Box, OneDrive, and Google Drive integration

DataViz today released Documents To Go version 4 for Android with a new interface, as well as support for editing Microsoft Office files and the ability to connect to multiple cloud storage accounts. You can download the new version now from Google Play.

Support for Microsoft Office editing is clearly a direct response to Google making Quickoffice free for Android and iOS. With Quickoffice now shipping with Android 4.4 KitKat, DataViz has to move fast to stay on top (Documents To Go for Android has so far seen more than 40 million free downloads and upward of 1 million licenses sold).

Here’s the full version 4 feature list:

  • App redesign – Modernized user interface includes a refined file explorer and easy access to extensive editing and formatting options.
  • Cloud file access – View, edit, save, and sync with multiple cloud services: Dropbox, Box, OneDrive, and Google Drive.
  • PDF file support – High fidelity viewing of Adobe PDF files is included.
  • Multiple file save and synchronization options – Save and sync directly to your Android device, Windows desktop and laptop via USB, and to various cloud services.
  • Android Kit Kat (v4.4) OS compatible – Fully functional with additional optimizations coming in future updates.

The cloud integration is interesting because unlike other apps, it doesn’t limit you to just one service. Dropbox, Box, OneDrive, and Google Drive can all be accessed directly from within the app.

That being said, file access via cloud services, desktop sync (Windows only), and password protected file support are only available via in-app purchase. Each of the three features are available for $4.99, or you can get all three as part of the Premium Pack for $9.99. The purchase of any of these advanced features also removes in-app advertising.

If you previously used Docs To Go “Viewer Edition,” or if you’re just getting the app now, the editing capabilities come at no additional charge. “Full Version” users meanwhile get the three aforementioned advanced features as a free update.
