Utah Software Engineer Mints Physical Bitcoins
Singapore’s central bank announced today (via BBC) that it will regulate virtual currency intermediaries which operate within the country, including Bitcoin exchanges. This is to address the issue of digital currencies being used potentially for money laundering and terrorist financing. Cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin have been linked to criminal activities due to their anonymous nature. Singapore is thus introducing rules that require operators of Bitcoin exchanges and vending machines to verify the identities of their customers and report suspicious transactions. The Monetary Authority of Singapore notes that the regulations will not be extended to “the safety and soundness of virtual currency intermediaries…

Yummly has finally launched an iPad-optimized version of its smart recipe search engine. Launched way back in 2010, Yummly has been serving foodies with recipes based on their exact preferences for a while already. Dislike mayonnaise AND salt? Yummly lets you exclude such ingredients from your searches. Thus far, Yummly has only been available for the Web, and Apple’s smaller-screened devices, which launched in September last year. Now, it’s made the obvious next step by catering for tablets too, which are becoming increasingly common across the culinary realm. And we’re told a version for Android should hopefully be arriving some…

Google now lets you ride the Colorado River’s whitewater rapids on Street View

Eighteen months after Google entered the Grand Canyon to capture panoramic imagery for Street View, the Internet giant has teamed up with American Rivers to ride the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon and capture even more impressive views. Though this certainly boosts Google’s arsenal of imagery on Street View, it seems part of this move involves promoting the fact the Colorado River as ‘endangered’, which is a problem given that it’s the source of irrigation and drinking water for millions. Indeed, as Chris Williams, Senior VP of Conservation at American Rivers notes: “By the time it reaches the Gulf…

Customers of UK mobile operator EE can access 4G LTE services while away from home in France and Spain from today. The option is available for consumers and small business customers and will be extended to include the US, Italy, Germany, Switzerland and the Netherlands “by the summer”, EE said. It’ll also be extended out to larger business customers too. Naturally, to use 4G services while abroad, you’ll still need to buy an inclusive data bundle but there’s no extra cost for accessing 4G networks while abroad rather than the usual 3G. EE also doesn’t allow customers to use data services…

xiaomi 9
Popular Chinese smartphone manufacturer Xiaomi is holding an event to celebrate its anniversary in early April, where it is speculated that a new device will be released. Signs are pointing to a second generation of its budget Android smartphone, the Redmi (previously known as the Hongmi in China). All smartphones imported to China must be certified to use wireless networks, and a Sina Weibo posting today (via Engadget) noted that a smartphone submitted by Xiaomi has been listed on radio communication device regulator TENAA’s website, with the red Android buttons pointing to the fact that this is the Redmi. A quick check on the site,…
