Amazon has announced something that we thought could be on the horizon: it’s increasing the price of its Prime and Student Prime subscriptions in the US. The company hinted during a recent earnings call that the price could be set to rise – and today we have confirmation. It’s the first price rise in nine years for Amazon Prime – which nets subscribers access to on-demand streaming, free two-day delivery and e-book rentals – and will now cost $99 per year, up from $79. It’s a slightly smaller price increase for students, up to $49 per year from $39 previously….

London 2012 - London Transport
Boris Johnson, Mayor of London, wants the capital city to also be the ‘tech capital of the world’, he announced today, without spelling out exactly how this would be achieved. Talking at an event in London’s Shoreditch area, Johnson said: There is nowhere to rival London for tech firms to thrive and grow – we have the talent, the investors, and the entrepreneurial spirit. Our tech offer now spans the capital in its entirety, from Tottenham to Croydon and from Wembley to Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. I want London’s world-class tech sector to be as well known around the globe as our tourism, arts and financial services –…

Web development and design platform Wix is seeking to expand its mobile offerings as it announced today the acquisition of Appixia, a platform for building m-commerce apps. Wix launched a mobile adaptive service for its customers in October 2013, and it says that by the end of the year, more than 1.6 million mobile websites had been created on its platform. Currently, its users come up with over 30,000 new mobile sites every day. Wix says Appixia’s platform, which lets users build feature-rich native m-commerce apps on iOS and Android devices — including push notifications, barcode scanning and location-based services — will…

Utah Software Engineer Mints Physical Bitcoins
Singapore’s central bank announced today (via BBC) that it will regulate virtual currency intermediaries which operate within the country, including Bitcoin exchanges. This is to address the issue of digital currencies being used potentially for money laundering and terrorist financing. Cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin have been linked to criminal activities due to their anonymous nature. Singapore is thus introducing rules that require operators of Bitcoin exchanges and vending machines to verify the identities of their customers and report suspicious transactions. The Monetary Authority of Singapore notes that the regulations will not be extended to “the safety and soundness of virtual currency intermediaries…

Recipe search platform Yummly now caters for iPad users

Yummly has finally launched an iPad-optimized version of its smart recipe search engine. Launched way back in 2010, Yummly has been serving foodies with recipes based on their exact preferences for a while already. Dislike mayonnaise AND salt? Yummly lets you exclude such ingredients from your searches. Thus far, Yummly has only been available for the Web, and Apple’s smaller-screened devices, which launched in September last year. Now, it’s made the obvious next step by catering for tablets too, which are becoming increasingly common across the culinary realm. And we’re told a version for Android should hopefully be arriving some…
