Daily Dose News Roundup

  • Jeff Bezos’s representative just left the board of a startup that raised $1.4 billion on his name. The first truck has not been built.
  • Snap lost a 400 million dollar AI deal, 20 million dollars a month to the Iran war, and 24 per cent of its stock price. The AR glasses had better work.
  • Volkswagen just became Rivian’s biggest investor. It is not buying trucks. It is buying the software its own engineers could not build.
  • Pinterest just crossed $1 billion in quarterly revenue. The bet that made it work was not social media. It was search.
  • Tesla is selling Chinese-made cars in Canada to escape the tariffs that both China and America imposed on it

Quotable

"Any artistic event that is subjectively judged in part by the accompanying music and style, is not a sport. Of course in the Winter Olympics, they overlook that due to the revenues Figure Skating and Ice Dancing generate from all those bored spouses who would otherwise not watch the Games at all." ~ Yasha Harari

Google Keyboard for Android now makes suggestions and corrections based on what you type in other Google apps

Google today updated its Google Keyboard app for Android, adding a new Personalized Suggestions feature under the hood that lets it grab data from other Google apps and services. You can download the new version now directly from Google Play. While the changelog merely talks about an option to switch the keyboard color scheme (white and blue) as well as the usual “bug fixes and stability improvements,” DroidLife points to the above message once you install the update. Essentially, Personalized Suggestions uses data from other Google apps and services to improve the keyboard’s suggestions and corrections. The data is stored…

Prism for iPhone has a fascinating new take on photo filters

The color wheel has nothing on Prism, a new iPhone app that lets you roll your own photo filter combos based on the colors in your original shot. There are plenty of photo filter apps for the iPhone—more than enough by any objective measure. But I’d argue that such image enhancements—which often sport names like Holga, Toy Camera, or simply a year from the past century—have been partly responsible for the depth and variety of the bustling iPhoneography scene. Lots of photographers eschew filters, but they do serve a creative purpose. And that’s why a mysterious newcomer called Prism from…

The common elements of good storytelling

typewriter storytelling
Paul Jarvis is a Web designer and bestselling author, who’s obsessed with nature and hairless rats. His latest book, Everything I Know, is a guide to freelancing as a creative professional. My favourite activity while I lived in Tofino, BC was attending my artist friend, Roy Henry Vickers’ storytellings. His art gallery is a large room, set mostly in cedar, with an inset middle area where people can sit at several levels and listen. Roy Henry is First-Nations, so his culture is one of passing information to the next generation through story. And he does it well. So well, that the handful…

Watch two developers swap faces in real time with Kinect

Have you ever wondered how it would feel like to swap bodies with your friend? Now you don’t have to wonder anymore. The second-generation Kinect sensor for Windows is powerful enough to let you trade faces: The project comes from Apache, and in the video description the team notes an important caveat: “As the Kinect doesn’t track head rotation it means that both users need to be looking in the same direction for the illusion to work best.” Still, we can imagine many use cases for this technology, such as the Kinect capturing multiple faces in real time and putting…

PlayStation 4 update to add rich video editor, 720p Twitch streaming, HDCP off option, and more

E3 Gaming And Technology Conference Begins In L.A.
The Xbox One has already received a few firmware updates and it would seem the PlayStation 4 is about to follow suit. Sony today detailed an upcoming patch for its new console that will allow players to turn HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection) off at any time. At the moment, this protection means that players can’t record footage using an external capture device. They can stream a session with Twitch or distribute a short clip with the Share button, but vloggers and video producers couldn’t record and edit longer gameplay sessions. Once the update lands this will no longer be…
